The Last Guardian Help me Like this Game

I want to like this game, but I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. There's no clear indicators as to what route to take in an area. Sometimes the route you take doesn't even look like something that is accessible. Sometimes you need your beast friend to help you reach a location but he does everything except for what you want him to do, making you think you were doing it wrong then you go to youtube to watch a video and realize you were right.

I don't think Trico will ever guide you to where you need to go, and at times, will be a real pain in the arse to control. Controls have never been a Team Ico strong suit.
However, even though there are plenty of areas to run around, the main path is usually somewhat clear. Most side paths will either circle back to the main one or dead end at something. Exploration is a big part of the game, so if you're not viving with that, it might not be for you.

There are commands you can give him to tell him to do things and believe it or not he's pretty responsive. The problem is they never really do a good job of explaining what the commands are. You should refer to a guide online since I don't remember but essentially the four I remember are the point (go that way), the jump, and the action (tell him to interact with environment, switches, etc.), and an attack command, but he does a good job of attacking on his own I found.
To do a command you hit some button plus one of the four main buttons I believe. They tell you about the point and jump commands kind but not the interact so a lot of the time I wanted him to do something the first playthrough it was frustrating. When I gave him the command he did it pretty quickly.
The vast majority of the time I found it pretty easy to know where to go, however there were a few times where you'll have to figure it out with trial and error.
You can't find it frustrating because figuring out where to go and getting there IS the game. In most games traveling is just filler between the "stuff" but in this game the traveling IS the stuff.
Besides, it's not a very long game exactly, so if you blew right through it without ever getting stuck it'd be very short.
The only time I got stuck in the game was actually sort of a bug. I quickly figured out what I was probably supposed to do but Trico kept randomly turning back so I figured that wasn't it. I wasted like an hour in a room futilely trying different things before the thing I tried first magically worked. (it had to do with being underwater btw).
I liked the game well enough, but it sure as hell isn't as good as Shadow of the Colossus was.

I think my problem though is the ledges and whatnot that you "can" climb on don't stand out enough from things you slide right off of. A lot of the areas look the same too so I get turned around a good bit, thinking I've been somewhere before but really haven't.
Tirico is annoying. I'll climb up to his head, and all I need from him is to pull his head up so that I may access a ledge, and he just sits down.
