I'll probably lock myself in my office and turn the lights out today. I'm developing a training program from the ground up for a position currently occupied by a non-performer. Let's cross our fingers he flames out within the next week or so...

So you're developing this training program for the eventual replacement? Or are you going to the put the slacker through it if he doesn't manage to get himself canned.

And what does this have to do with games?

I didn't play anything last night either. Picked up Mockingjay pt 1 last night and watched half of it, the rest to be finished tonight. Pretty intense so far. I'm a bit put off by one big aspect of it, but my wife, who has read all the books, said that's the point. So we'll see.

We're revising job descriptions across the department to better support the business.

This particular guy had a previous manager promise him a substantial raise before leaving even though he wasn't performing very well. So, I'm the bad guy because I won't give him that raise he was promised.

In fairness, there is no documented training for this guy. So I'm putting together the program to get him a raise. But it will be up to him if he succeeds or fails.

Nothing. I don't have to get your blessing before I post.

So you're going to start this shite storm again?

My wife is on me about documenting every "promise" made to me by my bosses, because I think they're batting a whopping 0.00000 so far. They have the worst management senses. "We'll make empty promises to motivate with no real plan or intention of following through".

Nope, just keeping you in your place.

There's no point. They'll continue to do it as long as you sit back and take it.

In my experience all you can do is leave. Douche will douche.

I played the order last night. It actually does pick up a bit to be decent but it's still riddled with problems.

It's a shame it never is that easy. The only time I've ever really seen a manager reevaluate is when they have a revolving door position though.

I'm still looking for something new, but when that hasn't happened and you're the families only source of income, it's not that easy.

You don't have to tell me, I get it. My family is the only reason I still live here.

Completely understand. I've been there. Fortunately, I was able to move on when I was ready.

The thing that really got to us recently was that years ago, when the real estate market tanked, everyone in the company got a pay cut in lieu of layoffs. We were fine with it and fully expected it to be a temporary thing. I can't speak for others, but I'm still not back to that pay rate. So I was pulled in the office recently and told that I'd be pulling double duty on type of work (government work and local surveys), and if I impressed, I'd get that raise I'd been hoping for.

First off, I never mentioned to them about any "raises I was hoping for", because I don't beg. I foolishly think my work will speak for itself. And secondly, since it would FINALLY bring me back to my originally pay, I don't really consider it a raise.

I'm the same way and it turns out we are both wrong. Rarely does work speak for itself and in general the squeaky wheel gets the oil. I'm lucky enough that my boss does like me and actually does notice so I don't have to campaign for anything. I've been on the other side of it though.

At least the keyboard I just bought isn't on sale. I'd have been pissed.

The guy that trained me 10 years ago taught me a valuable lesson at this company: working your tail of IS generally appreciated, but it becomes the new standard for everything else you do. It snowballs out of control to the point where you can never please them. Or every day it's "is that all you got done?"

Yea I hate when that happens. The mouse I paid $80 for a month ago is on sale for $45.

Reading this thread makes me count my blessings I have been self-employed my entire adult life even though sometimes I question my own sanity.
