Zerg should always have 2 bases, except for ZvZ's where 1 base all in's can still work at high levels.

I've actually had a decent day in the ladder matches. Played a few scrubs, but also won a couple of close games and even blew up a 2 rax and cleaned the guy out

Nah, its about normal.
You can't be placed into masters just from placement matches, and I'm not certain you can be placed into diamond(initially). It all depends on MMR, which if you really care, google SC2 MMR because I can't explain it that well.
I would absolutely recommend watching the tournaments, at the very least MLG, and GSL if you can afford it.

Yeah I'm getting destroyed by terran mass thors (zerg player). it sucks
Plus, you usually have to have a 1-2 base advantage over the other players to win in the mid/end game.
Scouting is huge. If you can figure out what your opponent is doing, you've got a great shot and figuring out the counter FTW.
But, most games are won and lost with macro/ early rushes.

Yeah I think I'm starting to get the hang of it now, I've won 6 out of my last 8/9 I think. I've been scouting more and more throughout matches and it's been really helpful for me in determining what to do to counter and as a result, I've been able to hold back Terran and Toss players more effectively, or crush them with blindside ling rushes before they're ready. Then I'm usually able to clean up with 10-20 mutas. ZvZ is still a crapshoot for me though. Almost always go 7pool in those games and its usually a matter of who can get lings and spine crawlers out first

MVP is disgusting is what I got from that video. MC was streaming yesterday, with a new account in EU. I feel bad for those poor souls he played in his placement matches.
