Sony and Backwards Compatibility

So I have a 360 and a gaming PC. Was looking to buy a PS3 because one of my favorite series of all time is Metal Gear Solid. Was looking at the different models and doing some research. Does anyone have any clue why Sony decided to get rid of the backwards compatibility feature of the PS3? From what I understand the new PS3s will play PSX games, but not PS2 games. This to me seems like they will get LESS PS3 sales because of this, but maybe their rationale is that it will cause developers to produce more PS3 games? That's the only sense I can make out of it, otherwise it seems like a bad move.

Yeah this was the reason I went with a 360. I still have 2 or 3 PS2 games that I am playing and I figure if I still need my PS2 hooked up I might as well go with a 360...since all of my friends have a 360 and they are on Xbox Live.

I don't know about full backwards-compatibility, but I know that I've played Madden 2008 for the PS2 on my brother's PS3 without any trouble at all... So apparently at least some games will run on it. I haven't read anything about the backwards-compatibility about the PS3 though, so if there's any particular games you are looking at running I'm sure you can Google it to see if it will run...

Sony made models of the ps3, the 60gb version I'm pretty sure, that will run PS2 and PSX games. But that feature is being discontinued going forward.

Ahh, interesting... This is one of the reasons I still haven't laid down the cash for a PS3, because I still have plenty of awesome PS2 games I haven't finished yet... (in addition to not having an HD tv...)

Yea me too... I will probably wait until another price cut until I get one. I mainly want it for 1 game atm anyway.

Yep, with the problems I've read about Sony having, I'm sure a price cut is not all that far off... I know you're basically getting a cheap Blu-Ray player that plays games (if you want to look at it that way), but it's still too pricey for me to even look at right now.

If you read the same article I did then yea I'm sure a price cut is on the way soon. Especially since the ps3 is no longer the cheapest bluray player on the market, which it was for a bit.

PS3 is still a good system but I do agree that the price needs to come down by half.

This is all in light of Sony's new anti-money-making business model. They based it off the "Big 3" in Detroit, it's all the rage in the corporate arena these days.
In all seriousness though, Sony's reasoning was that including such compatibility would have made the system cost even more and delayed it's launch even longer.

60 GB - has ps2 hardware..plays all ps2 games
40 gb - no hardware, no emulation, will not play any ps2 game
80gb - emulation software, will play most ps2 games

then why does the back of the box on the 80gb model say it won't play PS2 games?
