Sincere question(s) about Fortnite.

In all honesty, I'm a COD kinda guy. Picked up warzone about a year ago after not playing since MW3, and for some reason I've always looked down on Fortnite. Whatever the reason may be, I've always had the perception that it was a "kids" game, or for the "try-hards" out there, and never even thought about giving it a chance. Well, some of my buddies talked me into downloading it tonight. We hopped on into a match straight away when i didnt know shite about what i was doing, they were coaching me through what certain shite was, etc. and we ended up winning 5 straight BR matches.
My first question... Is there skill based matchmaking in fortnite? I'm dogshit at the game, but it was like I was playing against bots on recruit level. My team was frickin hyped up about 5 in a row, but I didn't really grasp why since I've never played before.
Second question, CAN YOU NOT CUT YOUR PARACHUTE WHEN YOU GET CLOSE TO THE GROUND OR DO YOU "HAVE" TO GLIDE IN WHEN YOU JUST NEED TO GET GUNS OR LOOT?! Didn't mean to yell, just pissed me off.
Lastly, this was not meant as any kind of "brag" or that kinda bullshite, I'm genuinely curious, is winning the first 5/5 games good, or was my team hyped up to frick with me? I wouldn't put that past them.
If they are fricking with me, please let me know. One of my teammates works for me, so I'd LOVE to have to fire his arse over a game IDGAF about.

I like the game even though it gets a lot of hate. But I’m frickin terrible at building and I’ve just accepted I’ll never be great at it, so I’ve gravitated to playing Warzone and Tarkov now.
I especially like casual gaming on my PS5 where I can just lay on the couch, but for me the controller is not it. I’m too competitive to sit there and get dunked on so I have to play PC for any shooters. And controller for Fortnite is horrible with the amount of editing you have to do

I like it. I play with a few friends and my son. You’re thrown into a random match in BR, but if you start winning the system will try to match you with better people. I got up to about six in a row one time with some friends and it definitely matched us with better people. If you look on the upper right, there is a box and there is a line on the left while you’re gliding. The glider will automatically deploy at that line until you hit the ground. You can’t put it up below that line until you touch the ground.

yes, as the game got more popular and more kids played they made it worse/better for beginner level guys to be matched up with similar type players....also you'll have a lobby of 100 but 50-60 likely are bots. You feel "good" when you have a 5+kill game, but when you get to the end and its some try hard guy who is cranking his builds its like wtf did you just waste 20 min on?
I play every now and then with my son for shits and gigs...we both have grown out of it for sure, but good to put on from time to time and mess around with.
It's gotten pretty popular over the years so the "events" they do are fun for the kids to watch and be apart of

There is SBMM. The reason y'all won 5 in a row is because when you create a new account you are put in to all Bot lobbies, until you reach a certain level.
I had a friend create a new username when he switched to PC and he was party leader and we got put in 10 bot lobbies in a row at least.
Once you play more and get better it will start to put you lobbies with real players. If you want to try it out quicker than waiting for the game to put you in one you could always give Arena a shot.

When you start playing real people, the building will be annoying af. I ha e played with my son for years. Back in the day, cars, rpgs, etc were a good counter, but the builders raged and they cut back. You could get a Gatlin gun that would eat, too. FN comes down to who builds the best.

Little bump here.
Fortnite just removed building from the game in one of their modes and now it’s basically a third person, cartoon version of warzone.
It feels casual and I like it.
My won my first few games and realized that up until about level 10, most of the game is populated with bots to get you accustomed to the game.
Every now and then, in the final circles, you’ll run into real players.
Also, I’m not great at the game at all but I do enjoy it for a quick hop in and out play session.
