So it seems like some outlets got access to the first 3 hours of the SH2 Remake and pretty much everyone is saying it's blowing away their expectations.
I know lots of people were skeptical because it was Team Blooper, but it sounds like they've turned things around since the initial reveal trailer.

Game looks good and apparently it's a 1:1 remake, which is good, but holy shite Maria's voice acting to open the clip was fricking horrible

I just bought the SH HD collection on Xbox since it's the only way I can play the original SH 2 right now (it's also on sale for about $9 on the Microsoft store). I've heard it's awful, but I figure it's still good to have a baseline before going into the remake.

It was at first because the developer was given incomplete code (final code was lost), so they had to finish the game while reworking it.
They applied a few patches that improved things a lot. Unfortunately the XBOX version didn't get the final patch, only PS, but I hear it's still okay.

These reports of it being good, actually, are giving me hope that will probably end up being in vain.
Bloober Team can do ambiance and imagery well but their writing is always heavy-handed and whenever you have to do anything but simply walk around in their games it's awful.

This was my first thought too. In 2001 we were still squarely in the middle of thr golden era of terrible video game voice acting but Mary/Maria was top notch. Without going into spoilers for a 25 year old game, Maria is supposed to be sultry, playful, with a subtle under current of "bad news" about her.
New chick is monotone and sounds too old and serious.
