Sega Nomad

The thread about past system choices got me thinking about the sega nomad. Did any of you guys have one? I honestly feel like it was so far ahead of its time. You could take it with you and use your same sega cartridges. AND you could plug it in and use it as a controller.
I know many of the systems went to a cd drive, but it would have been cool for someone to implement this again. Especially now that storage devices have gotten smaller with more capacity.
I loved taking my games with me and not having to buy separate cartridges. I may have been the only one as it was a massive failure.

The Nintendo Switch?

Well yes, sort of. But it's a little bit different.
I mean if xbox or playstation went to hard disks, and then you had a device that you can use to play those disks on the road. That's what the Nomad was.

We are starting to see that with XCloud but as of now I think its limited to the Gamepass library. You can stream your digital library from your console but at some point I think you may be able to access your digital library from the Cloud. If you have good connection it works pretty good on your phone with a controller .

I think the nomads problems were:
1. Timing, it came out in 95. While being a mobile console, it was still playing Genesis games at a time where it was now competing with the PS1, N64 and even the sega Saturn.
2. Price, almost $200 in 95 money
3. It drained batteries. (I wouldn't have played my game gear very much had I not gotten the rechargeable battery pack) went through 6AAs like nothing
That being said, it was a pretty good accomplishment to make a mobile genesis

so many memories playing NBA Jam and Shining Force crammed in a corner close to an outlet because my game gear ate all the batteries in the house.

The Turbo Express that played Turbographics 16/PC Engine games was another. It came out in 1990 at a price of $249.99. It was pretty bad arse for its time.

I mean with the advancements of handheld consoles and digital downloads this is just not something the brands like microsoft and sony would find profit in
you would have to look towards 3rd party companies
For instance, the Hyperkin Supaboy would be closer to the super nintendo equivalent to the nomad

I had one (still do somewhere at my parents house).
It absolutely destroyed batteries. It would take six brand new aa batteries and they would be dead in less than 30 minutes.
It was fantastic on long road trips. I had a power inverter in my parents van and had the power plug for it.
I need to see if I can find it over the holidays.

I didn't have one, but I had a Game Gear at the time and remember reading somewhere that it was even worse on batteries, so I didn't bother.

I did. Was kicking myself 5 years after I sold it when I saw what they were asking for one in a game store. It was cool as hell.
