Question about Octopath Traveler

Do the 8 stories ever converge? Currently I'm 9 hours in and have about two party members left to recruit. So far you just randomly talk to a dude in town and they join your party for no discernable reason. The cutscenes play out as if that character is alone yet battles have your full party.

I'm in what i guess you would call Act 2 of 4. I finished all the characters first part of their story. In Act 2 they sort of talk to one another. I've read they don't really converge but if you do some secret bosses then it does.
I enjoy it for what it is though. The combat is awesome.

Kinda, but even if you don't do that part the game is great with all 8 stories separate, only one of the stories is super lame, the other 7 have great points in all of them.
I grew to love the tavern scenes as well

I like the combat, but it makes the regular fights drag at times.

They hardly do. Honestly, it got to a point in that game where I had to grind levels for characters’ stories I didn’t care much about and got tired of it quick. Fantastic battle system, but the story and characters didn’t do it for me after a while.

What then is the point of it all? Just to experience the 8 stories and watch the credits roll?
I love the soundtrack and art direction in this game though.

I feel like they were trying to be ‘open world’ about it with a modern take on the old school JRPG combat system. The combat is honestly some of the best I’ve ever experienced in an RPG, but lord do the stories and characters just scream mediocrity.
I can’t say what the ‘point’ is so to speak, but if I am playing a turn based game, I expect the story to be one of its stronger points. Yeah, from time to time the gameplay can carry the game, but the needless grinding in Octopath kills the experience for me. I got into the late 30s in levels, so no clue how far I got, but honestly I probably won’t be revisiting it anytime soon.

You can skip most of the fights with creatures outside of dungeons if you skip to towns on the world map.

I am not trying to be difficult, but where is thr grinding part of the game? I actually want to get some JP up on a character to add skills.

What chapter are you on?

1/4 of way through chapter 4 (completed stories for 2 characters).
Do not have a hidden job yet.

It would seem to me that you have to grind if you want to blow through a specific story before tackling another. I only say that because the recommended level for each second chapter is at least level 20. At best, your character is level 5-7 when you finish chapter 1.
The character I started with has never left my party and is only around level 18 with two party members left to recruit, and I've only used fast travel once.

I like this game, in principle, but the story has failed to grab me. Probably because the plotlines do not intertwine and I haven’t really noticed much of an overarching narrative. It gets tiresome playing chapter after chapter that seem to follow similar story beats.
I put it down months ago and I haven’t really come back to it.
The combat and class systems are quite fun. I just wish there was more of a narrative hook.

At the top right side of the map, the city goes into a plains type area. On the top left side of the plain, keep going left, that area is also an advance job area, it is the highest level area for farming
