PS5 cross play question

So I have a unique question that may seem kind of dumb. If I have a PS5 and someone that I play a good bit with has a PS4 with a physical copy of Call of Duty Black ops cold war PS4 game for his system. Since I have a PS5, if I want to still be able to play with him online do I need to buy the physical copy PS4 version or will it let us still play together if I buy the physical copy for the PS5? I ask this because I know I can play the PS4 version on my PS5 but if we have two different physical copies of the game will it let us play together? Sorry if this confuses anyone. Ha!

Crossplay for most games is a login tied to the game manufacturer itself. If you play COD I think you need to log into your Activision account to play. If you play Fortnite you log into your Epic Games account.
It doesn't matter if you are on PC, PS4, PS5, or XBOX. You are logging into the Activision account on that device to play COD on Crossplay.
The physical disk or download of the game files is for your local computer or console to render the images of the game so you can play it. Hope this helps.
