Leaving the resorts are expensive but I was able to play two fine golf courses for cheap thanks to golfnow, etc.
We did the XPLOR park and went ziplining, cave swimming, UTV riding

I brought cash for tips. Used card pretty much everywhere else

Those courses looked really nice. I haven't played golf in so long it's pathetic. The most golf I've played this season is hitting range balls into the gulf in Mexico. I miss it.

Our resort had ATMs but I didn't even need it
Might want to call any cardholders you have before traveling and let them know or they may freeze your account if you use it abroad

If you need pesos, check the exchange rate. Our resort had a shitty exchange rate but I didn't even need pesos
The souvenir shop in the airport told me they could charge my credit card in pesos or USD, and their exchange rate was shitty so I had them charge me pesos and my CC holder converted it automatically to dollars using the actual exchange rate. Exchange rate last week was 15.4:1, but the hotel and store were using 12.75:1. frick that

My total for hotel and flights for a 6 night vacation was $1940 for a 4~5 star all inclusive resort.
Of that 1940, I redeemed 950 dollars in points from my Barclay card, so that vacation cost me less than a grand before considering my golf and other excursion.
