They’ve already based two Pokémon games in America (Northeast and Hawaii), so I think it’s relatively likely one of the next few Pokémon generations takes place in the Southeastern US equivalent (if not certainly West Coast). Was thinking it through, and here were my ideas.

First the starters:

Grass: a Possum that eventually evolves into a Grass/Psychic Type

Fire: a Racoon that eventually evolves into a Fire/Dark Type

Water: a Beaver that eventually evolves into a Water/Ground Type

Now for the cities and their gyms:

Miami: Electric
Orlando: Fairy
Tampa: Water
Atlanta: Normal
Charleston: Ghost
Nashville: Rock
Memphis: Fire
New Orleans: Dark

The villainous team would be called Club Civility. Club Civility grunts have beautiful Pokémon as the ones they battle you with. It would consist of classic fraternity and sorority girls as their minions wearing baby blue and white suits and dresses respectively. The leaders of it are a husband and wife that had their young child killed by wild Pokémon, and wish to tame all Pokémon not for power but everyone’s safety. They’d have their two surviving kids primarily face you, and the leaders would face you together with gendered Pokémon each.

The Elite Four are in the middle of a beautiful lake that would be in Arkansas, being Dragon, Grass, Psychic, and Flying Type.

And of course the local professor would be called Professor Magnolia.

Any thoughts?

A Birmingham gym with a foundry theme and Steel-types would be cool.

New Orleans could also be ghost themed, but I don’t know what I would choose for Charleston instead (and they both definitely need to be in the game).

Having a section in the game where you boarded a riverboat and had some battles (a la SS Anne-style) would be very cool.

Of course Orlando would need to have a theme-park and the Disney Castle.

If you included Texas in the game it would be a toss-up as to whether you’d want an oil-based Houston gym (perhaps poison type) or a cowboy/western Dallas gym (I have zero clue what the type could be).

You’ve actually got a lot of options for starter Pokémon. An alligator or snapping turtle would both make great models for a water type. A buck could work as a grass type (or you could have some extremely rare encounter for it as a roaming legendary in a forest route). Fire types are harder. I’m not sure what I’d do there.

As for other potential legendaries you could have a river monster of some sort in the Mississippi and a ghost/dark (perhaps voodoo inspired) in New Orleans.

Put the mythical/event give away Pokémon in Disney/Orlando and make it Fairy. Perhaps at the top of the castle in a hidden/locked room.

The South would definitely make a great region. There’s loads of unique material to work with.

Going with a Voodoo vibe. Make someone like Dr Facilier be the gym leader.

I considered putting in Birmingham and making it Steel type, but it’s the city that brings the least to the table in unique vibes.

Memphis you’ve got BBQ, Elvis, the Blues, and the Pyramid.

Nashville you’ve got the country scene and the Opry. Someone like Dolly Parton being the gym leader.

Charleston is just a really cool city that while not huge has too good of an environment to skip.

Atlanta is just too big of a city to skip even if it doesn’t have the coolest vibes.

Tampa you’ve got a cool bay area and a pirate theme going on that could be fun.

Orlando is very obviously fairy and got to do an equivalent of Disney World.

And Miami just reeks of being a great town in Pokémon.

Texas is kind of its own thing. If Texas were to get a game, I’d lump in New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas as its own region.

And I’ve just thought of this region’s gimmick: musical instruments. Each town is named after an instrument and each gym leader is a musician. When you defeat a gym leader, they give you both a badge and the instrument they use. Playing a musical instrument makes you lose a turn, but increases a certain stat of all Pokémon on your team and can only be used once per battle.

1) Drums for Physical Attack
2) Saxophone for Physical Defense
3) Electric Guitar for Special Attack
4) Bass Guitar for Special Defense
5) Violin for Status Heal
6) Harp for HP Heal (can’t revive)
7) Trumpet for Speed
8) Flute for Accuracy
9) Banjo for Evasion

You get the ninth instrument (Harp) beating the leaders of Club Civility

Do we see a resurgence of Jynx in New Orleans is the question?
