It was that guy. But I wrecked him the 2nd day first try playing. Once I figured out parry is the main mechanic things have been going pretty smooth so far. I just got to the first bead offering.
Slash, slash, slash, parry,, counter slash, dodge slash slash seems to work. it's all about the parry timing.
I'm really digging it so far it scratches that same part of my brain that BB did all those years ago. I just feel so powerful cutting through normal enemies like im a shinobi. The amount of power feels amazing, it's a great feeling.

Yeah once you master parrying you feel like a fricking badass.
Fuuuuuck I have to play through this again.
I think I left off halfway through NG+5.

2-3 hours in and man this game reminds me of how much I love Bloodborne.
Not really clicking so far, and good lord am I terrible at it. I’ll give it at least 4-5 more hours and see where I’m at.

I'll tell you what made it click for me. I started almost playing it like a rhythm game, those kinds you press buttons in sequence in time in a rhythm. Slash slash parry slash parry parry slash slash, jump, etc repeat. Also realizing there's no penalty for dashing was the other "oh shite* moment for me
Rather than running in blindly and button mashing. Once the timing clicks, it really becomes a very absolutely amazing experience. FS if a GOAT dev. Not many games can get my heart racing and then pay off massively with an actual adrenaline rush like their games do. Miyazaki is a true legend

For whatever reason, I’m struggling to get even marginally good in this one. I’ll stop comparing it to Bloodborne soon, but while I never was amazing at BB (some of those videos of people no-damage killing bosses are ridiculous), I did pick it up pretty quickly. Once I made it past that first bonfire I was good. Killed Father Gascoigne first time, etc.
Was getting hammered by the chained up ogre mini-boss in Ashina outskirts, so I went to Hirata Castle and made it all the way through various mini-bosses to Lady Butterfly. 7 or 8 straight losses to her led me back to the chained up ogre, and I killed him straight away.
Lady Butterfly doesn’t feel unfair at all. I’m just not that good.
I did read some things about people fighting her later in the game, so maybe I went through hirata earlier than most?

Yes Lady Butterfly is def more challenging than most early game bosses, coming back to her later is fine and what I did too.

This is what I mean about these games reminding me how much I played Punchout. I love it.

Understandable.
Me and a buddy were playing it basically in parallel over XBox live in party chat together. He got to Owl before I did, but I got to him and beat him before he could and he rage quit and never picked the game up again.

I sort of figured the combat out in the whole Tenzen Yamauchi miniboss/setpiece area. Although I found him to be a pain in the arse even after I “figured it out.”
Gyouba/horseback guy was relatively easy, especially considering that the game considers him the first real boss (outside of Lady Butterfly). After that I was feeling especially good about how much I had figured things out until the next miniboss just killed me pretty much immediately.

I made it to the last boss. I can kill him twice, but can't get him the third time. I need to jump back on and finish it. It was the best game of 2019 for me. It tough to get to when all your friends are wanting you to run matches of COD.

One tip - use the umbrella prosthetic in that fight to block gunshots. Builds up his posture and doesn't damage yours.

It has definitely clicked for me.
Took me a while but I finally got Lady Butterfly. A fight that I liked overall, but I think her final phase could have been done better.
I have definitely come around, and I think it’s a pretty great game. I do think the penalty for dying to a miniboss is annoyingly high. That’s my only complaint left. It’s just a pain to clear an area over and over again if you (like me) are just sort of ok at the game.

Took like 10-15 tries but Genichiro is done.
Are Gourd seeds worth buying or should I save my money for other stuff?
Doesn't seem like there's a ton of stuff to actually spend money on, but I haven't really bothered to upgrade prosthetics much.

Tbh the fricking flaming arrows at the beginning of the game pissed me off.
