UK's CMA released new preliminary findings today, and they have found that Microsoft's divestiture of Activision cloud gaming to Ubisoft is sufficient to address their nonsensical competition concerns. Final ruling comes October 18, but this makes it clear that the deal will close without any regulatory concerns anywhere in the world. That's good for Microsoft, since they would prefer to hold off on "closing over" any nations until they absolutely have to use that. Letting this play out instead of "closing over" should gain them some goodwill with the CMA.
In theory, the CMA could still block the deal when they release their final findings, but Microsoft would have a rock solid case against such a decision at this point so that will not happen.

The sale of Activision’s cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft substantially addresses previous concerns and opens the door to the deal being cleared, the CMA said today.
While the CMA has identified limited residual concerns with the new deal, Microsoft has put forward remedies which the CMA has provisionally concluded should address these issues.
The CMA is now consulting on the remedies before making a final decision.

Deal is expected to close by Friday the 13th, which means the CMA's final decision is expected to come down within the next few days.

Microsoft is planning to finalize its $68.7 billion proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard next week. A source familiar with Microsoft’s plans tells The Verge that the company is eyeing up Friday October 13th as the closing date where it announces to the world that the 20-month process to buy Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard is over.
That date will still depend on the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority though, a regulator that blocked Microsoft’s deal earlier this year. Microsoft recently restructured the deal to transfer cloud gaming rights for current and new Activision Blizzard games to Ubisoft, and the Xbox maker secured preliminary approval from the CMA late last month as a result.
The CMA has a deadline that expires today [10/6/2023] on gathering opinions over whether it should grant consent to Microsoft to proceed with the merger. A final decision from the CMA is expected next week, and barring any surprise last-minute changes should allow Microsoft to close its deal.

You have to have a neck beard to care about money?

Can someone please explain how this effects my ability to play COD on my PS5 in the future?
Not my physical ability because I'm pretty bad....well, you get it.

Xbox owners will be able to play Day 1 with Game Pass(not confirmed but any idiot knows it's coming).
PC/PS/Nintendo owners will be stuck with the $70 price tag.

Ok, so nothing changes.
But PC has Game pass too. So, no COD on that gamepass?

not sure how they'll handle that. the game pass libraries don't quite line up as it is between xbox and pc. plus, the battle.net launcher is limbo now i assume. not sure how they'll migrate that or if they even intend to.

Understood. Honestly, if they include in PC game pass, I would probably get it (game pass).

i believe their plan is to be a streaming subscription model that can be accessed on anything and everything (like netflix). including playstation, nintendo, and even apple devices.

Good plan. Would probably make bank. You think they ditch making consoles all together if they can get that going?
Posted on 10/13/23 at 9:18 am to SaintEB
Absolutely. Sony and Microsoft have both admitted that they sell the consoles at a loss. They make their money by selling games, online subscriptions, etc.
If they can cut out having to sell a $500+ console and have everything done on an app, they will destroy Sony. They’ve been playing the long game towards this for over a decade now and it’s finally coming to fruition. Sony can sell all the consoles they want. They are winning that battle but will lose the war ultimately

i'm no programmer/developer, but i don't see how large multiplayer games will work from a streaming standpoint. handling connections between players while also sending info on the game back and forth? not everyone has fiber internet.

even then, most of what i read is streaming isn't quite where it needs to be. doesn't mean it won't get there eventually i guess.

Streaming on the PS5 isn't all that great, and I have fiber. To the point where I don't do it. It may get better, but its not there right now.
So, I don't think this is the play. You get people to subscribe to your service, and you download them to your PC/PS5. The only way Sony even remotely competes is to release their exclusives, day one, on their subscription service. The problem is PS+ kinds sucks.

Sucks for you. Should be a smarter investor. There was clearly never a reason for this deal to be blocked.

I posted about it closing today last night. That's why Activision halted trading.

Video game streaming on Game Pass is okay, not great, and not at all consistent.
It's fine for puzzle type games or turn based games on my phone, but it doesn't work for games I want to sit down and play on the couch for hours. The CMA made the UK look like clowns for holding the deal up over that.
