Well you certainly are in a bruceish mood today

Well, my Seasonic Platinum 1000W power supply that I thought was way overkill for my system just blew up. Seasonic has a sterling reputation for these power supplies and I figured it would last me for years. Now I get to find out how good their customer service is on their $$$$$ 1000W Platinum power supply.
Hopefully, it didn't damage anything behind it like an EVGA 780ti Classified.

How old is it?
WTF were you pushing to fry a 1000W PSU?

Damn, that is surprising. You haven't had it very long, have you?

I don't really know. PS2 is fine, I've actually had fun playing with nappy. Other than that, I only play counter-strike:global offensive these days.

Just over a year old.
780 ti, 3770, two SSD and a couple of regular hds plus fans, fan controller, basic WC setup. Nothing that should have taxed that power supply at all. I took the second 780 ti out because of some issues a couple of weeks ago.
I've been blaming my SLI issues on the ASUS motherboard for quite some time and now it seems that I may have had a faulty power supply the whole time.

Is 1000w enough to push 2x 780 ti, plus all the other stuff? I'm sure you have the 3770k overclocked too.

Doesn't like mechs and lasers.
Play PS2.
Pew pew pew.

I generally only OC to play with benchmarks. For gaming and regular stuff I run everything stock. I mean it runs anything I want at max settings so there's no need to push it for everyday stuff.
When it blew it only had one 780 ti in it so I don't think I should have been anywhere near the limit of that PS. It's supposed to be one of the best made.

yeah, I don't know. That sucks though, that psu is like $400+ now. I've been running my seasonic 850w with 2x 7950s under full load for almost 5 months straight, and it has yet to show any signs of failure.

7 year warranty on the Seasonic. Just left a message with the RMA department. Let's see how good they are.

Seasonic really are fantastic PSUs. I feel your pain. I have a 1250w Seasonic Gold, and within 2 months the fan failed, causing it to overheat under load and shut down. Bad luck. I RMAed it, and they sent me a brand new one, and it's been flawless ever since. I've been mining with it 24/7 pushing over 1000w constantly.
1000w for two 780 Tis is just slightly over NVidia's recommended minimum:
But I don't think the load killed it. These PSUs are designed to be pushed to their limits for a sustained amount of time. NVidia's recommendations likely account for the absolute max amount of power those cards can draw under the most strenuous of conditions, on top of PSU capacitor aging over time, on top of a power draw under load for the rest of your standard PC components.
It's probably just bad luck. But what are your symptoms that make you 100% sure the PSU is dead?

A loud pop and arc from the PSU and a burning smell from it.
Do you think I should use a 2 PS system to do SLI with the 780 Tis?

It happens to good and bad PSUs. Fortunately, when it happens with a good brand, there's a much better chance that none of the other components were damaged. Sounds like it was just a defective unit.

No, not necessary. Even if it turns out that the 1000w can't handle all of your components under load (not likely), I would sell the replacement PSU and go with a 1200 or 1250.

In the meantime I've been meaning to do a rebuild on this PC to add a different motherboard and a new SSD drive so I guess this incident creates time for that stuff.
