Those are custom drives with soldered USB interfaces. There is no SATA interface, so no bridge chip. The logic board and the interface are married, til death do they part. A soldering iron will be necessary, and even still I am not entirely sure how -- there's also a flash memory chip I think. It stores drive-specific information and may very well need to be transferred to the new logic board.
Are you sure it's not just a loose USB connection at the drive end? That's common, although it wouldn't necessarily cause the slowdowns. Slowdowns are usually the result of a bad hard drive or bad logic board, and in this case it may be the same thing. :(
ETA: yeah, looks like that may the case as far as swapping logic boards.
The ROM from your current PCB would be necessary to retrieve any data.

it seems that each individual drive have a unique encryption key/password stored on its logic board, preventing swapping of logic boards, even on drives where the user has never chosen a password

From what I've read in various forums, yes, but others here might have more experience with data recovery than I do. I know there is always the professional data recovery option that costs lots of money -- depending on how much you value the files. I've lost some pretty important shite in my lifetime due to random failures and not backing up files. Now I back everything up to a 3TB external desktop drive, but even that's less than ideal. I believe having two backups (3 copies of the data) is an industry standard.
Was this a backup drive, or was it your only source for certain files?

My only source. I don't care about the music and movies, all my pics and videos of my son were on that thing. It's nothing earth-shattering but it still sucks.

Lesson learned. I'll get a huge desktop external as a master, a few separate portable externals. One for pics, one for seeding "things", etc.

well frick a bunch of that
typical horseshite though. i cant tell you how many externals ive disassembled because the interface went out but the drive is still good.

Any recommendations as far as brands are concerned?

ps4 has more pixels but xbone has a better frame rate there. I think I will stick to pc

Seagate or Western Digital. I use a seagate desktop external because it was a good price on amazon, but I don't trust any brand of hard drive really. I really do need more than one backup of my daughter's pictures, too.

You guys keeping up with the "next gen" consoles and games at all? They are previous gen games on a mid level pc with touched up graphics basically. Sadly these guys are arguing over it too. I may get one later for good exclusives like last of us type stuff but damn those games look average

Sounds like one is running like a bad PC port, except there's no way to adjust settings or create your own profiles.

Yeah this Next Gen game shtt is sooooo funy.
None of the games can truely run a consistent 30fps. I mean fckking 30fps anyway
These damn things are nothing more than APUs with faster memory. Nothing more.. there is no "optimizing" for a system because they are ALL the same damn system! lol
What us PC gamers will now get will be games which run even better on our dedicated cards!
Someone tried to argue with me about developers needing 1-2yrs to learn and optimize for the XBONE. LMAO Are you fckking kidding me, it is x86... what you see is what you get, no special coding going on especially with Microsoft not allowing Mantle on XBONE.

They get better at optimizing as the console life goes on but by that time there is much better hardware for pc and it doesn't matter.

No that statement is almost completely false.
We have mature x86 game engines. This isn't the case of 3 separate platforms like PS3/360's chips.
EDT:
This is soooo close to being a 1 for 1 Apples to Apples comparison.
We are just comparing different species of Apples but still the same fruit!
