Yeah you can save in different slots from either your phone or house.
I really like how if you're trying to do a mission but it's not the right time of day, the game automatically advances time so you can do the mission. It's a nice change from "come back during so and so time"

played for 3 hours last night... did some of the missions, a couple of the freaks, and banged a stripper. Im not sure Ive ever been more excited to continue playing a video game... its fricking beautiful

It's amazing. Finished a mission and decided to drive on the highway that goes all the way around the edge of the map. It's crazy how huge Mt. Chilad look when driving next to it.
I robbed a gas station then fled from the cops and had a coyote run out in front of me.
Also made it into the military fort and got into the fighter jet only to be shot down as soon as I took off. :AJF:

I stole a jumbo jet and it exploded when I was on the runway because a stupid arse cop car was under my wheel.
Side note, it doesn't take much to die in this one.

first time I flew over the fort and immediately got 4 stars, I panicked and crashed before they could shoot me down.

I havent really gone exploring yet... Played 9 missions between Mike and Franklin, which kept me mostly in the Hills

I had two strange random encounters last night. One was some guy on the strip pretending to be a zombie. I talked to him and learned quickly he was really bad at being a zombie. He kept saying things like I want small brains, empty brains, etc so I crow hopped his face and kept moving along checking out the strip.
Then I encountered some Hollywood star (not making the name so I don't spoil anything) and they kept trashing all things Hollywood. I crow hopped them as well and continued up the hills.
I saw what looked like a broken down mariachi band and stopped to see if I could help. They started cursing me in Spanish and then beat my face in so I mowed them down and stole their car which was full of guitars and sombreros.
This game has some of the strangest and best random encounters I've ever seen. None of them had anything to do with the story that I know of.
Oh yeah I got attacked and killed by a cougar as I was running from the cops in the woods.
