Followers are extremely helpful. I think the game is balanced around you having a follower, so take advantage.
To get Lydia I think u have to do quests for the whiterun jarl (mayor so to speak)
I like the mage followers. Also in bars you can hire mercs for 500g

Do the WhiteRun missions. You get a follower from damn near every town. There are people you can even hire. You can only have one at a time but it helps. They're at worst a temporary distraction.

The thing with the Skeleton key is that to complete the thieves guild quest line you have to give it up. So make sure to try and do that quest line first, and then keep the key for awhile.

Don't bother doing every single mission from a town. A lot are pointless and a waste of time for minimal g.
Focus on the main ones early to get the good shite. Mage college, dark brotherhood, thieves, companions, vampires, daedric quests....
Daedric lord quests are sweeeeeeet.
