I mean, everyone does it, and all of them get:

I think the thing with Nintendo is lately, they make 1 Mario, 1 Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, then call it a console generation and come out with their next machine.

Their other titles don't resonate with people in the same fashion. Arms and Splatoon are too niche. Nintendo is only publishing Xenoblade.

As franchises though, those are super young compared to everything else.

Splatoon yes, but Xenoblade is not much younger than Gears or Uncharted. And the GOW comparison is kinda off since it's basically a reboot of the series. It'd be like saying Xenoblade isn't a new IP because of Xenogears and Xenosaga.

The only IP criticism you can really have of Nintendo is that its developers get locked into stricter cycles than most. While Naughty Dog made 4 Uncharted titles, they also got to make Last of Us in the same generation. They aren't forced to carry over the IPs from the previous generation (ND hasn't had to touch Jak & Daxter and Crash for instance).

I hope that the success of Splatoon encourages them to explore new IPs.

Nintendo has the controlling ownership of Monolith Soft. Not the entire company, but more than 50%.

When it comes to first party though:

Sony makes 1 Uncharertered, 1 GT, 1 God of War then release a new console
MS - 1 GoW, 1 Halo, 1 Forza,
Etc. Again, they all have staples. This isn't a negative, nor isolated to one group. Nintendo is particularly affected by it because they lack true 3rd party support, however.

Splatoon? Niche? Splatoon dominates Japan. It sold nearly 5 million games on a console with an install base of right under 15 million. 30% penetration is not niche. It might be niche compared to Overwatch, but what game isn't? Call of Duty Ghosts sold 3.84 million on the PS4 for comparison sake.

You have to think of mobile presence as well.

We'll see about Arms. Nintendo games can kill though, Kirby and Fire Emblem usually sell like hot cakes on 3DS. Pikmin, Metroid, Animal Crossing, etc. Those properties generally sell very well Nintendo had two huge problems at the center of the everything over the last few years:

1. The failure of the WiiU - Yoshi Wolly World sold right at 1.5 million worldwide, that's not bad on a dead platform. The lack of a WiiU install base was just a problem (marketing, specs, etc. causing this) Bigger install base will immediately create more sales for many of Nintendo properties.

2. Nintendo was never ready for HD Graphics - Their output completely suffered starting with the Wii. They just could not make games fast enough that took advantage of the market, so many franchises have just lingered in limbo despite the sales they would generate. But you can bet an Animal Crossing Switch crosses 10 million sales easily.

Agreed. But Chronicles and X are two completely different games, even if they are part of the same series.

Arms is the first test of that post-Splatoon strategy. If whatever Retro is working on is not a new IP, I would love to see it be another game in partnership with Nintendo using a Nintendo IP. F-Zero? Eternal Darkness?
