What Microsoft and Sony have going for them is their massive marketing capabilities and budgets. Nintendo is not nearly in the same universe as those two. So who really cares?
So you'd think free advertising would be a good idea.

And you know what? You don't even OWN your own console. That console is a physical license that Nintendo has the rights to nuke (under the new EULA) at any time they feel like should you violate the agreement.
Cool?

On the other hand, I'll back up Henry Jones Jr's point. Nintendo could take a 25 million dollar deficit every year until 2052 before they actually went into a deficit/bankrupt. It's a very common misconception that Nintendo is broke.
When did I say Nintendo is broke?

Even their shitty games (cough Skyward Sword cough)

Henry Jones said something I just wanted to elaborate on.

Ever since Mario Kart 8 came out, they have been selling consoles like crazy
Like crazy as in worst selling Nintendo console of all time? While MK8 improved its sales, it's still doing really badly.
Amiibos have been very successful for them. If only they didn't discontinue models that sell out immediately.
This board relies too much on anecdotes as their data.

quote:You know as well as anyone here that as soon as the new Zelda and Star Fox drops, the Wii-U is going to skyrocket. They made the mistake of not having a Zelda title ready to launch with it and paid for it, but don't pretend like it's going to flop. It's already spiked in sales just from the new Smash.

People didn't watch Slender because of the person playing it. They watched ANYONE who uploaded it just to see them get jumpscared. That's the game. People don't watch Five Nights at Freddy's for the person. They watch it to see reactions to the game.
Ignorant statement is funny!

I wish that was true but I don't think so at all. Mario Kart gave it a nice boost but it has leveled out again and Smash bros didn't push that many. I did read that they are making a profit now but I wouldn't expect much more than a modest boost from Zelda.

That's the thing. Sales spikes are good for press releases, but when those spikes still have you well under your competition, is it really that good?
Star Fox will likely do nothing at all, if Mario Kart and Smash (both bigger than Zelda and Star Fox by huge margins) weren't able to make a long impact. System deserves to sell better than it is, but there's much more that can be done without major investment from Nintendo.
