Nintendo *is* back as far as I'm concerned. Didn't buy Wii or Wii U. Loving switch so far. Zelda is in the goat conversation and the seamless portability of the switch is gamechanging.
Imho, PC > playstations and Xboxes if you have to be chained to a monitor/tv to play and you want to play games not made by Nintendo.

At the time I'd take ps2 again but the games strived for hyper realism so they haven't aged well
It's a dumb hypothetical anyway. im just pointing out that most PSX, PS2 and n64 games are virtually unplayable they're so dated.
Shadows of the empire for example was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen. Camera and virtually all of the gameplay is so dated, I can't play it
Maybe I'm just not far enough removed but I don't feel that way about PS3. I think the hardware was such that the games will age very well. GameCube doesn't have too many titles I would play but they've aged better than the ps2 games and I don't think that's an uncommon view. Add to that a lot of those games that appealed to me at 17, 18 don't appeal to me as much or at all. Part of it is I didn't have the GameCube so I want to play new games more than ones I've played into the dirt so there's a bias there
There are a ton of ps2 games that have aged well.
FF 10, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Metal Gear 2 and 3, God of War 1 and 2, Jak, Ratchet and Clank. DMC, Silent Hill 2, RE 4, SWBF, Shadow of Colossus . ETC ETC ETC.
Not to mention the greatest SOCOM 2 (I know noway to play now)
Gamecube is laughable compared to the PS2 in the past or going back and playing now.
This is clearly your Nintendo bias showing here. And you do have one.
And to whoever said the DVD thing... Yea that was nice but the reason the ps2 sold better than any console in history is because it had the best catalog of games ever as a whole.

FF 10, Kingdom Hearts

I like playstation, and what i'm saying about PSX and PS2 don't apply to the PS3 which has probably the best catalog of awesome games and all of them will age very well IMO. again, pop in rogue squadron 2 or Metroid prime, then pop in MGS or GTA and tell me which system has aged better.
This is clearly your Nintendo bias showing here
PS2 was the better system, which I guess means it IS the better system, but I can still play some gamecube titles and want to. I can't play anything I had for my ps2 save for the 2 games you mentioned.

I will play MGS 3 over metroid prime any day of the week. You can't assume your choice of game is what everyone else likes.
PS2 has a much better catalog than the PS3. (and I like the PS3)
And really I don't care to know what you owned at the time, it means nothing to me.
I never owned a ps1, owned a 64.
Does not mean I can't admit the ps1 had a great catalog of games.

nothing but great memories of the ps2 which is why i don't play those games anymore. GTA3, my god...to that point i had never felt such freedom and really tested a game to see "what would happen if i did this" or "can I do this" but i see it today and it looks terrible, but i'll never forget rigging some mobsters car to blow and watching him get in it and get blown up casino style.

It was the DVD playback and this isn't even debatable.
The PlayStation 2 was a 300 dollar DVD player at launch when these things cost upwards of 500 dollars for a name brand player.
The games came much later, but this was the reason you had to have one.

Not saying it was not a factor.
The PS2 having a DVD player did more for DVD sales then the DVD player in the PS2 did for PS2 sales though.

Not sure how you can possibly look at metroid prime and MGS 3 side by side and say MGS 3 looks like the outdated one.

the graphics sold me, the dvd player was lagniappe because my laptop played dvds, but it was really cool.

This is what I was trying to say.
It pushed the DVD to become the norm and was the best deal on the market but it's not like most people were buying a ps2 only to watch DVDs.
Posted on 3/29/17 at 11:29 am to Mystery
I know people who did get a ps2 to play DVDs. I'd say more than a third of total PS2 sales were pure DVD player sales with people going: "and it can play games so good for the kids" but a DVD player first.
DVD was a huge reason PS2 is the all time console sales leader. The jump from VHS to DVD was a massive upgrade and people they didnt play games ever were buying PS2s.

MGS3 actually isn't as outdated as most ps2 games but if i had to compare those 2 particular games i would say Metroid hides its age better with the FP view. you don't encounter any humans in Metroid prime either so that helps.
it's my opinion that what made ps2 way better than gamecube is also what has helped the gamecube age better, but who cares how they age? it's just something i mentioned. you don't buy a system to play for 20 years. it's just cool to see how they have aged and what they look like vs. what we remember them looking like. i never played wind waker for example because frick that kiddie crap, but i played it for the first time a year ago and the age didn't bother me because of the art style. it's just neat.

I hear what you are saying but I still don't buy into it. There were still plenty of ps2 games that didn't go for full on realism and were still pretty games and hold up.
Look at Ico or Shadow of Colossus.
Or since you brought up WW, look at Dragon Quest VII or Rogue Galaxy.
The PS2 catalog is so huge you can't just keep comparing how GTA aged.

OT,
GTA3 is the only all time great game that I can't play anymore. It looks like poo now

No debate, the DVD player made the PS2 what it was.

Or the greatest catalog of games of all time as a whole.
Opinions are opinions I guess, but what system touches it's metacritic scores as a whole?
LINK
(Just for the record my favorite system was the SNES but the PS2 was loaded)
