He is 8 loves Mario and we actually watch long plays each night of Mario games on YouTube at night as a way to spend time together. Okay after all that we have a wii but all the good games are on the Wii U. My dilemma is do I move ahead and buy the Switch or spend the money on a Wii U for Christmas?

No need to spend money on a dead console:

WiiU

Most of the good games from the WiiU period should get ported to the switch anyways

Don’t bother buying a Wii U at this point. Get the Switch and the new Mario game. The assist mode is perfect for kids.

Switch already will have better games outside of smash than the Wii U did in 5 years within the next year.

Should be a no brainer.

Yeah, Switch is the no brainer. I expect most of its good games to be ported given how much of a failure the system was and actually had a great game library.

Mine plays a Wii U some, really just for Zelda games, which he loves. Mine is more sword and board so he's all about the Xbox one and old Elder Scrolls games as well as ESO. He plays some destiny online with family. I gave him the switch option with his birthday money but he's choosing a 4k tv upgrade and sleeper sofa for his room instead lol (smart kid imo)
