Ok so this game is very much "Doom at home," but I am a sucker for fast paced run and gun shooters. I also really like the Warhammer 40K aesthetic even though I know frick all about it.

quote:

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Well, it’s a massive universe. But to simplify it down to this game. The human race is on a slow decline being consumed constantly by war. For 10,000 years, the once great imperium has been ground into a fascist theocracy where most people just exist as slaves to feed the machines do war. Necromunida is a hive world. Which means it’s a world that is just a hugely compact city. They do what they can to help the war effort but their main purpose is to really provide soldiers to the imperial armies. But these cities are so big, there are millions of people who never see the sky. And in that area is where this game takes place, well below the city with little hope of ever seeing the sky again.

Also, depending on the hive world, most people haven’t really ever really had real food past corpse starch which is the ground up bodies of the dead turned into edible protein.

Also, the primary punishment in the imperium is lobotomize people and turn them into unthinking beings only programmed to do very basic things. Like the elevator dudes in this game

It's very janky and rough around the edges, and I don't just mean bugs. The melee kill animations are hilarious.

I’m only through lvl 6 and I’m kinda disappointed they don’t have some of the weirder gangs from the tabletop game. The enemies do feel kinda generic and we don’t get into any of the lore of them which would be fun.

Of the gangs I’ve encountered so far, we get very little backstory

House Goliath
quote:

History House Goliath was originally created in early M40 by the rulers of Necromunda as a slave race meant to toil in the refineries and forges of of the world. It fell to House Van Saar and House Escher to attempt and manipulate a new strain of Humanity for this task. Meant to work in areas where standard humans could not survive, they are nearly Abhuman in their size and strength yet still mercilessly cunning and resourceful. Their Van Saar and Escher creators believed them to be docile, but in 519.M40 they launched an uprising after the death of Necromunda's ruler Alberoth Helmawr. The new ruler of Necromunda Lady Jeuns Helmawr considered a slave race to be inefficient and antiquated and thus the authorities stayed out of the Goliath revolt. In the Hundred Cycle War of Hive Primus, House Van Saar established an alliance with House Goliath and the two worked against House Escher and their allies. It would be several centuries before all Goliaths were free. Even after the Goliaths of Hive Primus established themselves as an independent power, the violence continued. By the middle centuries of the 40th Millennium the Goliaths had taken their place among the Clan Houses, even if many of their peers did not yet fully accept them

House Escher

quote:

Arrogant and heartless, the Escher have a reputation for cruelty, and are perhaps the most vicious House. Their gangs may be all female, but they are as tough and heavily armed as any all male gang. They are fast and deadly, and tend to have a strong bias towards hand-to-hand combat. When choosing guns they prefer Plasma weapons for their high fire power.[5a][5b][6]

quote:

House Escher's wealth depends upon the Stimm trade, in particular the supplying of their Stimms to House Goliath and medical elixirs to House Van Saar. 90% of all stimms produced on Necromunda come from House Esher's Chymist clans.[12] Population

quote:

Almost all Escher are female, making them unique and perhaps the most strikingly different of the Houses of Necromunda. The few Escher males are physical derelicts; shriveled and imbecilic, perhaps due to a genetic defect in the House bloodline, or the after effects of an alchemical plague which many believe was the same as that which decimated the population of House Aranthus several centuries ago and ultimately led to its downfall.[1][2]. This physical dereliction may manifest as the males being born "simple, stupid, shameful slops of humanity." while "Most of them are stillborn born...[10b].

House Orlock

quote:

The Orlocks, as house members are commonly known, are responsible for the production of the majority of the iron in Hive Primus, which has led to the house earning the sobriquet of "House of Iron". House Orlock also holds a monopoly of the convoys serving Ash Wastes slag-heaps.[1] Of all the clans, House Orlock has the largest influence over the Ash Wastes between the Hives.[3] Besides their mining, House Orlock also oversees Wild Snake alcohol distilleries.[3]

House Van Saar

quote:

Van Saars are well-known for the superiority of their arms and equipment. Their technology is more cutting-edge than the other Houses. The House's manufacturing procedures are clear-cut and its completed products are of the utmost quality. The Noble Houses of the hive are known to pay handsomely for Van Saar-made goods; as a result, the House is undoubtedly the wealthiest in Hive Primus.[1] Due to this familiarity with Imperial weaponry, as well as the abilities to improve and use it in combat, Van Saars are often recruited by the Imperial Guard as "High Utility Conscripts".[2] Their staggering power, however, is built around a dark secret – flaws in their understanding the corrupted STC that creates their technology, flaws that bathe them in radiation and slowly kill them from within.[4] The Van Saars have a well-earned reputation of being serious minded and sombre people, with a deeply deep-seated emphasis placed on order and hierarchy. Like the other gangs of Hive City the Van Saars have a style of clothing which distinguishes them from others. In their case this equates to a close-fitting body suit intended to defend and sustain the wearer in the harsh hive environment. Semi-permeable membranes in the suit reduce the loss of the body’s dampness whilst numerous spots on the material change colour to inform the wearer of airborne pollutants and reduced levels of oxygen.[3]
