There will be some..but you shouldn't notice it...even on the wireless. The problem you are having is interference. Stuff in the house is interfering with your wireless signal.

I'm referring to the cable connection...
but see what you may be talking about
you are talking about running the cat 5 from the modem to the PS3 right?
on the modem, there is just one slot for the cat 5 cable

Yes, but you will need a router, which you have if you have wireless. If you take the slot from the modem to you PS3, the computer that is hooked up will not have internet. It needs to go from the router to the PS3.

Seriously, my wife can understand simple networking...so I know Black can...
Or am I giving him too much credit?

You need to put a cat 5 plug in the wall and run a line from router to attic.
From there, plug into another router and fish a cable down the wall next you the PS3 and put a cat 5 plug there.
Hardwired. I did it last weekend.

i don't know if FIL will be too keen on me cutting a hole in his wall to run a wire through...but imma talk to him tonight
if not, i may be able to splice the cable connection and run a jack to the bedroom and use the modem we have from our old house

This may work too, but you will have to notify the cable company so that they can allow your router access to their system. Then again, they may want you to pay for it. If you choose to do this, try it first, see if it works....if not, then you will have to call them. Do you have cable TV in the bedroom? You can attach a splitter to it..run one leg to the tv, the other to the new modem....alas, your own modem in the room.

Yeah, at lowes they have the parts. They have clean looking wall plates and shite.
They even have a mix and match type set up where you can run the cat 5 on the same plate as the cable connection so you dont have to cut any new holes.
You will need to remove the box in the wall but it looks good having the cable and cat 5 plug coming from the same hole.

yeah, lowes and home depot sell RJ-45 jacks (the plug used to make ethernet cables) with wall plates. It makes it look nice.

Cox cable with the box
You can split it before the box. Call Cox and have them add the modem to their list..then it will collect an IP. There are conflicting reports on if there is a cost associated.
