My gut feeling is that since they went with dedicated PVP servers for EQ1 & 2, they'll do the same for EQNext. What would be truly ideal is if they used the "phasing" tech from DCUO so that you had equal access to a version of the game that's PVE and a version that's PVP (in DCUO you go to the "Phase transporter" or somesuch to "phase" over to the PVP or PVE version of the game).
As far as huge open terrain to explore... have you ever played one of the EQ titles? If you haven't, they are both F2P so download one just to get an idea. ;)
