I thought scary shite only came out at night. I went outside my house in full sun and one of those exploding bastards did some serious damage to my crib.
All hostile mobs spawn at night, or in dark areas. During the day, they will all conflagrate except for creepers and spiders.
Spiders encountered during the day aren't hostile unless provoked.

These underground cave systems are fricking huge. I just got about 100 iron ores just from one cave.

Just wait until they update the game to include ravines...

This game is all about altering/exploring your environment.
It's like video game legos with enemies, an inventory system, and massive environments to explore.
If you need a game to push you on to new objectives and tasks, this isnt for you.

Out of a group that is 25 of us and 13 are out, not a fun day. I will be picking up large amounts of booze tonight.

Are there no fence gates in this version? My wolf pen looks stupid with a huge wooden door in front of it.

Stout said last night that they weren't in it yet.

It seems like a waste of time because it looks boring. Walking around for hours....digging and building shite?
When you first start the game, you'll be required to create a new world. Each world is procedurally generated, thus resulting in a completely unique, random world. No two worlds will ever be similar.
When your character is dropped into the world, you have nothing. You acquire items by breaking blocks - trees, sand, grass, etc. This allows you to collect materials that can be combined to create various items - pick axe, axe, shovels, swords, bow, armor sets, etc.
By "mining" ceratin items (ie, breaking blocks), you can take the materials and craft various items, which allow you to acquire different sets of materials. For example, wood gathered from a tree can be coverted to wooden planks. Planks can be coverted, if you want, into sticks. Sticks, when combined with coal, can be used to create torches. There are dozens of recipes like this in the game.
Hostile mobs will spawn at night or in dark areas (like underground cave systems). When a mob attacks you, or if you take fall damage, you lose life, which is represented by a bar of hearts. When you lose all your hearts, you die, and consequently lose everything you're carrying. If you're quick, and have decent navigational skills, you can make it back to your corpse and recover your items. Killing pigs or other wild animals drops meat, which replenishes hearts. Cooking the food in a furnace (a crafted item) will result in more hearts being replenished. Farming wheat for bread and cakes is an alternative to meat.
That's essentially the core of the game. Rare, exotic minerals can be found in the deepest caves, such as diamonds. Acquiring diamonds is one of the first goals for many players, because diamond tools last for quite a long time. Additionally, they provide extra benefits - a diamond sword does far more damage than, say, a wooden sword. A diamond pick axe will mine faster than a stone pick axe.
Exploring the world is fun for many as well, although most probably enjoy building various structures. Your imagination is the only limit. If you want to build a cottage on the beach with a pier for fishing, you can. If you want to build a base 50 blocks underground with a skylight for a ceiling, you can. Playing with other people naturally enhances the experience.

So what about clay? Is it in this version? I wanted to find some to make bricks for a new house but I haven't found a single clay block.

Clay blocks haven't been added yet.

Damn, well that kills a lot of my future plans. I was gonna build a sweet brick 2 story house but I guess it'll be just ugly cobblestone.
On the plus side, though, I found some mossy cobblestone under a mob spawner.

I'm gonna have to join up with you guys on stout's server, but I feel like I'm gonna be so far behind in terms of resources.

I have a few of those blocks too. Found a room that the spawn system was already destroyed and harvested it.
