Fair point but still don't think it's worth not playing an entire game because of it. Most likely the scenario you mentioned doesn't happen too often.
Even the settings thing is minor. There is a notepad file most likely with your settings that the game reads. You can just carry that with you on a flash thumb drive. It's a little inconvenient but you should only have to do it once on the computer.

Oh shite this is a huge one too
I am assuming that is for older games and not many AAA games.
FTR, I'm not against steam at all. I'm against people overreacting to not buying a new game because it's not on Steam.

Not really accurate. If the game supports workshop, it supports mods. That's not something exclusive to older games. The biggest benefit is how easy is makes the process while also streamlining updates. Also allows the community to filter out the bad ones as people rate them, etc.

Played both Metro 2033 and Last Light. I said the trading cards were pointless, but the point I was trying to make was that Steam has things built in to that reward you playing the games you have. And if you truly don't care, sell them and use that money to buy more games. I'd made over $40 selling free things I got on Steam marketplace.

I 100% it looks super dated, but I'd rather have unnecessary features than lacking some extremely important ones
Default Steam looks dated, but it’s common knowledge you can get third party skins for it. Epic Launcher has no user reviews, no discussion boards, no steam workshop, all the little extras like cards and badges, no extensive profile customization, and obviously for most your friends are all on Steam or the vast majority are.
Competition is good as long as it’s equal. Origin, which I’ve used extensively, only has the exclusive EA games going for it and that’s it. UPlay achiemevementd give points for little extras which is cool, but that’s it. They’re both just bloatware compared to Steam. Epic is the same.
Especially with multiplayer games. Overwatch and Battlefield 3/4/1 were able to beat the odds and have extensive player bases outside Steam (not counting Fortnite because it’s free, the ones listed were $60 games at launch with much more costs in DLC). But Battlefield V is a dead game, Battlefront 1&2 are dead on PC compared to other similar games. Of course that is in part to being wonky games but the Steam playerbase would have given those games more life. Same with Destiny 2 on PC, giving that game out free couldn’t even save it. Bethesda is learning that the hard way without Fallout 76 on their own launcher.
PC gaming was the dark ages before Steam got big and with all the splintering and exclusives now, it’s gonna descent back to that.
