Pretty sure this behavior:

quote:

It seems like steering is a lot harder after the update. I keep trying toget near a target for observation and usually end up losing control and crashing back into Kerbin.

Is due to piloting skill.

Pilot skill determines SAS ability in absence of module.

Fudge.

Also, I'm having problems manually transferring fuel? I'm ALT+Right clicking on both tanks, but I cant get the transfer to pop up? Please don't tell me they've done away with this.

Was able to get into orbit without upgrading my launch pad. You have to get a few science branches unlocked but once you get the FL-T800 Fuel Tank, that can get you there.

Basically my stages were

First State:
FL-T800 Fuel Tank, a FL-T200 Fuel Tank on top of that with a LV-T45 Liquid Fuel Engine.

Second Stage:
FL-T800 Fuel Tank, LV-909 Liquid Fuel Engine

Third stage:
Command Pod Mk1, Mk16 Parachute

All of this came out around 7-8k in funds and weighed around 17 tons

If you accept the contract for orbiting Kerbin and succeed (I don't think there's a time limit on it) then you will get a huge chunk of funds. I think it's around 50k. I was able to upgrade my launch pad and still had around 45k left over.

Well, I got into orbit, upgraded the launch pad and crew station so I could EVA to get loads of data. Then accepted contract for the Mun. Got my rocket and off I went. Didn't realize the navigation computer (don't know what else call it) does't work unless you upgrade a building. Well frick me. So, I said screw it, Jeb said his prayers and off we went to the mun. Wish I had screen shots, but my butt was clenched so tight I didn't even think about taking any. Oh well, made it there and back. The new update has really made this game hard.

Here's my lovely Mun rocket.

Well I feel like a moron. I've been making a lot of funds by going to the mun and exploring to complete contracts so I can upgrade the astronaut complex and tracking stations because I thought those two were the ones you needed to upgrade in order to plan maneuvers. Well last night after I upgraded both of those, I find out that's not what you need to upgrade. The only thing you need to upgrade in order to plan maneuvers is the Mission Control building for 30,000 funds. Well I did that after completing my Minmus exploration contract so now I have upgraded the Mission Control, Astronaut Complex, Tracking Center and the VAB. Safe to say I think I'll be able to launch my first mission to Duna and Ike here in the near future. I already accepted a contract to explore Ike.

Next thing I'll upgrade is the R&D building because I can research anything that costs over 100 science.

Well hellfire, I thought I had to upgrade the tracking station for like half a million, this changes everything.

Same thing I thought. I just got curious as to what I got for upgrading Mission Control and sure enough, that was one of the things. You do need to upgrade the tracking station in order to see encounters with other planets or moons though.

Also, just saw this on the KSP subreddit. This guy made several new planets based off Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They look pretty good.

You should stream on twitch. My talent is lacking so I need to appreciate someone elses (manley is just absurd in his skill)

I've thought about setting up an account. If I ever decide to stream I'll let you know. I hope you enjoy seeing lots of explosions and rocket building.

Damn those planets look awesome. I wish the building upgrades gave a better description of what they did. I must say though, the new upgrade has made career mode a huge challenge. Trying to send a rickety 30 part rocket to other planets is a blast

I did discover that when your pilots skill is low, you'll fly and steer much better if you only fly at half thrust or less. Even with SAS on I noticed that at full thrust my ships tended to lose control quickly.

It really is. I love it because there feels like a real sense of progression now. Before I upgraded the launchpad I did more with an 18 ton rocket than I ever thought I could.

So this game is like a space exploration combined with strategy building? How does it work? As in how do you level up and how advanced is the game for the average person?

The core joy of the game is the building of rockets/spaceplanes.

Think Legos.

The exploration is just there to give you something to do with it, and add to the sense of pride that your creation worked.

In career mode you start out with a very limited supply of parts, and you collect "science" by doing experiments on missions, returning successfully, etc. These points can be redeemed for more and more parts.

Also, there are contracts (Use xxx parachute at y altitude, orbit the planet, land on the moon, etc) which upon success provide the player money to upgrade the launch complex, and to build rockets (parts and fuel started costing money as of a recent update).

Learning some basic rocketry principles can help a lot, but is not required for success. You'll just be reinventing the wheel.

The strategy building aspect is pretty simple, you get money from exploring space and completing contracts. Most of the contracts are simple; launch a rocket, get into space, achieve an orbit, explore another planet etc. This money is used to build rockets and upgrade the various buildings. The money and upgrades are fairly generous.

While in space you can perform various scientific tasks to get science points. The harder the task to perform (ie taking a surface sample from a far away planet) the more science points you get. These science points are used to unlock new rocket parts.

When I got the demo the only thing I knew was that rockets went up. Sense then, I've learned about escape velocities, Gravity wells, planet orbits, spheres of influence, etc. It's a steep learning curve but you'll get the hang of it quickly. There's also a ton of videos on YouTube to help you.

I'll start with the demo.

3 more questions:

If i put all my resources into a rocket and it blows up on the launch pad do i have to start all over and rebuild all my resources?

how much control over the rocket do you have once it's built? As in do i just tell it to land somewhere or do i actually land it?

If it blows up you can revert your flight to the launchpad or rocket assembly building, no money lost.

You have total control over the rocket once it's launched. You maneuver it, control throttle, responsible for staging etc

IIRC the demo is sandbox mode, you get a bunch of parts to just dick around with. I believe you can get to the Mun on demo.

No, you have the ability to revert to launch or the assembly building.

Similarly, you can quick save right before a particularly difficult maneuver so you can revert to that point if you fail.

You have total control of the rocket, you have to get mods to have a setup where you just tell the rocket where to go. What the base game does have is something called SAS, where it will do the microcorrections needed to maintain current course.
Also, when you are in orbit, there is a planner that you can adjust the orbit to what you need it to be, and it will tell you when you need to burn, how long, and in what direction to accomplish it.

Does the full game explain anything before you start.i have the demo. Sandbox mode is cool and I'm starting to get the hang of building stuff but a small tutorial or some instructions or something would be useful if only to familiarize you with the basics.

There should be a tutorial at the main menu when the game starts up. At least there is in the full game. I don't know if they put that in the demo.
