As great as it was, it isn't even the best Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy VI is the best game I've ever played.

XII better than X? Interesting. I've only been able to play through that once because my disk is no longer in working condition. Spectacular gameplay, environments, and game depth though. The only thing that put me off was having Vaan the Worthless as the intentionally centric character and accidentally leaving the real heroes, Ashe and Balthier, as peripherals.

XII had the better story idea, better game play, better characters (except Vaan).

X executed the story better than XII.

I think the reason I love VI is because, not only is the best story in all of the FFs, but its also executed better than any of the other installments.

I really think X's entire concept is brilliant. The way it draws parallels to Christian concepts of original sin and how religion blinds.

Plus, the soundtrack is possibly the best in the series (forgiving a couple of moments of sickening electronica).

VI was the first game I played in the series, and I agree. I also think Lock & Celes is a great love story, something scarce in the FF series and in video games in general.

I'm a sucker for the music, man.

Not to say that VII doesn't have great music. It's wonderful.

It's just in MIDI.

To say I've listened to it is an understatement. Lol.

Piano collections, Tour De Japon, The Black Mages, etc.

I love piano collections from all of the games.

I'll agree with most here that VI was the best Final Fantasy to date. I still play it about once every other year or so, and I've got all the character themes as ringtones. It had it all, in depth gameplay, amazing and memorable characters, out of this world music, and probably the best villian in video game history.

I don't know if a remake of VI would be able to capture the charm of the game the way the 2d sprites do. FFVII is ripe for a remake though. Original Playstation title, all of the character models have been updated already, and a built in audience. I think Setzer is the only character from VI that has been given a new-generation model.

1. FFVI
2. FFXI (yeah yeah doesn't count but I like this game ^^)
3. FFVII
4. FFX

.
. bunch of other games, FF or not
.

x. FFX-2
x+1. FF9

7 and X are close for me, with the nod going to 7 for Aeris' death and Omnislash. I liked X, but I found that shite was way too easy. The progression of the game, as I remember it was: joke, joke, joke, joke, why is the bitch whipping my arse?, joke, joke, unlosable final battle.

Beyond the customization in leveling characters however you wanted in 6, I also look at how every character had their own story and at least a bit of character development. And the thing that still impresses me is that you aren't forced into getting any of them (with limits) to beat the game. You can beat it with anywhere from 3 to 13 (or was it 14? Crap, been awhile) characters, depending on your own preference.

I loved them all. 7 was definitely my favorite. I never finished 12 because I got a 360 when I was about half way finished and just never picked it back up. Then I sold my PS2 so I probably will never finish it.

Oh, and while I thought X was really really easy, I felt it played like reading a good book. I didn't finish XII, mainly because Vaan was terrible.

Instead of a cohesive and naturally flowing story, XII was just a mish-mash of visuals with the story giving the developers an excuse to show off new environments. "We have to go to Giruvegan now. " "Why?" "Because it looks surreal, eerie, and awesome, dumbass."

Terra's entire story in FF6 is incredible.

Also, I loved the storyline regarding the complete loss of magic and the use of industry to make up for it.

I haven't played Japanese II and III, but I, IV, and V all centered around "crystals." I think that storyline had worn thin at that point.

Also, the use of espers to acquire magic was great idea.

That game was incredible.

One thing that bothered me about X was the strict, linear game play. Most FF allow you to jump around a little bit within reason, but X didn't seem to give you that freedom.

So let's just cut to the chase... did you cry during the opera scene?

Out with it, now.
