He ushered in a pretty successful civilization while it lasted. It seemed cared about his people enough to assist in fighting the demons when you know who tucked up

At the same time he violently overthrew a race of creatures thay from I can tell were content to let them be. He was kinda of a dick to the pigmy. Took the best soul for himself. Then instead of accepting his time had come to can end he drags out horrific events around his kingdom by rekindling the flame

There is no right or wrong answer here. Depends on which Primordial Serpent you side with

Gwyn prolonged the age of fire . Led a pretty good civilization. fricked over the pygmies. watched the world come to an end basically.

He simply delayed the inevitable, the age of darkness. And the same question end up being presented to the player. Extend the age of fire, or usher in the age of darkness. Thus we ask, are we the good guy in dark souls ? in the end , we have to make the same decision as him

I think “we have to make the same decision” is a fairy big oversimplified boiled down bare minimum take. We have to make that decision because of Gwen and all his positive and negatives

Also you gloss over how he slaughtered the dragons, a race as far as I know we have nothing no evidence showing they had ill will to them, simply for power

I guess my take is he was a capable ruler whose people generally failed well. He was also power hungry, unwilling to accept his time had come and gone, and ended up destroying way more than he ever did good

Gwen was not good or bad, just a desperate man trying to make his life last longer while also making his life better (which in turn made the world a better place and ultimately... those he called his citizens).

He sacrificed himself over and over again to keep the age of light going, not for his people, but for his own gain, but that does not take away from the fact that he still helped out humanity by doing so.

I would say he was a typical human with the drive to do something while not accepting the status quo. He just went about helping his own situation by doing... some very evil things. I don't view him any more evil than Western Civilization as a whole, who do the same things in the name of "freedom"

One thing I might add is that we never really find out what an “age of dark” entails.

Does everyone go hollow? Do the dragons return? Why is Kaathe so bent on following this progression?

And then there are the paintings - Anor Londo has been abandoned and forgotten, yet what of Ariamis whose entrance was within its walls? And you know what’s weirder than world within a painting? A world within a painting within a world within a painting.

I mean honestly it’s probably just all incoherent obtuse stuff with cool names but after playing them all over and over and watching all of Vaati’s stuff sometimes your mind wanders back to it.

I’ve always taken the age of dark as what I consider the occums razor answer. The age of humans

That’s another thing that’s really unclear.

The pygmies, primeval man, found the dark soul and were contained in the ringed city by Gwyn.

So who are the seemingly “human” inhabitants of all the places like Astora and Catarina?
