I played through the Crysis trilogy here are my thoughts

In 2017, I finally have a PC that can play Crysis at a tolerable framerate with all the bells and whistles turned up. Hilariously the framerate still dips pretty bad especially when the physics get nuts, but my processor is an old Ivy Bridge Core i5 from like 2012 running at stock speeds.
I kinda liked the simplicity of it, and it felt like a PC shooter (even has quicksave button). There were some frustrating design choices made where the good parts were really good and the bad parts were really bad.
Pretty average game that gets grossly overrated by PC elitists.
Crysis 2 on the other hand was a lot of fun. I may be a console peasant, but I liked the urban environment and more tunnel-like progression. You still find yourself in large, open combat arenas where you can progress any number of ways, so in actuality, I don't feel it's that much different from the first game. In many ways it's even better due to the linear nature of the second half of the first game.
The game feels polished and well optimized, still looks great, the shooting feels good, and the plot/action set pieces were entertaining throughout. I'd put the single player campaign in Crysis 2 on par with any CoD or Halo.
Crysis 3 was just awful. The graphics look better, but everything is grey/brown. Almost the entire game takes place at dusk or at night, meaning you can't see anything.
The environments were far more open and secondary objectives returned (although I don't really know what completing them will do for you), so there's that.
The story is just goofy and the enemies are a lot less fun to fight. There's actually a lot less shooting in Crysis 3 overall. The game is also really short, clocking in at about 6 hours total.

I thought Crysis was only a meme among PC elitists?

It currently sits at a 91% on metacritic. There are people out there who really do consider it one of the best FPS games on PC.
I guess they like endless respawning enemies that can snipe you with a machine gun round 100 yards away, clunky suite morphing abilities, the majority of wish are completely useless, and floating around in a confusing alien ship for 1 hour because everything looks the same.

No one ever said they are good games.
The graphics are damn near 10yrs ahead of consoles at the time. CryTek did black magic shtt with that engine.

It was good for the time but no way is it a great game.

They really were impressive, but they basically built a game for hardware configurations that didn't yet exist. That never works out because you cannot predict the way technology will evolve.
I would argue that EverQuest II in 2004 looked more impressive than Crysis in 2007 yet no one could run that game maxed out either and even today, it runs like garbage because it's built for 4GHz CPUs and not multicores.

I remember back in the day, Crysis was a litmus test to see if you had a beast PC or not

Crysis 2 was a very good game, and one of my favorite FPS campaigns ever. I remember getting 3 for free and I played it for like an hour before losing interest. 2 was the perfect blend - quality shooting mechanics, interesting story, and the perfect balance of openness and tunnel-ness in the levels

I never experienced this. Far Cry 2 maybe.

Are you talking Crysis or EQ2 here?
I haven't been in EQ2 for a long time but I can run Crysis at 200FPS easily.

I love the first one. The sequels were neutered since they were made for consoles.

It still is with certain mods.
