I beat the first two trials, tried the 3rd one a few times... and moved on.

completing the dream bosses and finding all the grubs before venturing to white palace. nearing the end. then tackling DLCs.

Working on getting double jump. Got all the other movement abilities. Then will backtrack through all the areas, then dreamers.

The progression, from seeing a boss for the first time and it completely destroying you , to being able to beat the boss without getting hit in 20ish minutes gives a similar feeling to DS. Way more forgiving though I agree.

Lot of NPCs scattered about that return to dirtmouth and offer goods or quests after you find them is similar.

Obscure but deep lore is definitely similar.

I wish Dark Souls had a setting to make it more forgiving. I want to like it, but I just suck at it.
