Help school me on Pokemon games for my son's new 2DS

We were in target yesterday and they actually had a DS in the display case. My son has been wanting one but everyone was out of stock on everything DS related before Christmas so I grabbed the 2DS for him. He didn't have enough money for a game to go with it so right now he's just rocking the Mario Kart and a couple of Demo Pokemon games. Stopped at Gamestop to see if there was anything there he could afford. Looks like used 3DS pokemon games hold their value. They want the same price for a used Pokemon game as a brand new one.
Looking on Ebay at some used games mostly DS in his price range. Honestly don't know what I'm looking at but I see several options in the sub $20 range. Diamonds. Pearl. Platinum. An Alpha Saphire. White. Black. Any suggestion on which one I should get for him? Or should I just make him save him money for one of the new versions that are out now?

Don't know how old your son is. If he's at an age where he knows what he wants, then get him that game, and make him earn the money by doing chores for you or something. If he's not at that age, id look for deals on Amazon and just make sure it's compatible with his system. Most of the Pokémon games are similar, so he'll get the same experience from any of them

Only get him X & Y or the new Sun & Moon.
Some of the games you listed aren't even compatiable with a 2/3DS.
Nah.. Black & White I would never suggest. They are very different from the others. IMO terrible games. B&W 2 fixed a lot of the issues in B&W but still broken.

I have been playing Pokemon since 1997 (I am 25). Let me help you out.
If you have a 2DS for your son, you can buy either DS or 3DS games and I promise they will both work.
3DS Games: Pokemon X or Y, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, and Pokemon Sun and Moon.
DS Games: (Black, White, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum)
The reason is because the 2DS is backwards compatible with DS games even though it primarily plays 3DS games.
PS> If you are wondering "why no 2DS games" that's because Nintendo built the 2DS to remove complaints about the 3DS 3D slider. The 3D it displayed was not very good so they scrapped in the new system.

Has he played any Pokémon before? If so what was the last game he played?

Download Red or Blue on the Virtual Console and have him play that one. First Pokemon game most of us here ever played, have that one be his first too.

^This. They cost $10 each. They are great games and the Pokemon can even be transferred to the newer games once they update the PokeBank system this month (its an app on the 3DS).

He's only played Pokemon Go and trades Pokemon cards at school.
he ended up doing a couple of hours or work to earn enough money to get Sun. Took us a couple of stops to find a place with Sun, first two places we stopped just had moon and no Sun.
