I'd definitely take meauxjeaux's advice here before going out and buying a cable. You will likely see some improvement with a new cable but meauxjeaux sounds like he speaks from experience and it will hopefully fix the crappy quality problem.
Daygo, what you're talking about is not unheard of (even neglecting the compression issue). Higher-quality equipment usually has pretty good Digital-Analog and Analog-Digital converters, and in these cases you won't see a significant difference in quality even with the HDMI cable.
