Have the Monster Hunter controls always been so whacky?

I’m not using a pro control but playing this upscaled demo of Generations.....these button settings are hot garbage and so is the menu to change them, even in a demo.
X and right shoulder button are the attack buttons along with select and to my knowledge there is no lock on button at all. Like it’s bearable, but a bit frustrating for such a simple battle mechanic. Is it the same way in world?
There’s even this toggle in the right hand part of the screen that appears to be a “lock on lock off” type of button but it didn’t do anything noticeable. Idk. This game’s a no from me until I get some info from some players of the other games. Thanks.

This was mandatory for high level play.
So yeah, count your blessings for having two nubs.
And yes, Monster Hunter games do not have lock on. The camera locks on to enemies in the newer games, but not homing attacks.
As far as MonHun World, I think there's some assist in the camera/lock-on, but it's not super friendly like an action game.
