1. My understanding is a multiplayer game is purchased digitally, one that requires each player to have its own switch, they can play together if both consoles are tied to the same account. Is that correct?

2. Piggybacking off of that, if they are playing "locally", like in the car on a road trip, is a wifi connection required or can each switch 2 see each other? Would it require a cable connection?

We have a regular Switch and a Switch 2, and both can play the same game. We also have no issue with both being logged into the same account at the same time on both consoles, but have only done this while not playing the same game.

There is a feature that allows you to copy a "virtual game card" from one Switch to another to share games between two consoles that are linked to the same account, and this does work well between our Switch 1 and Switch 2. LINK LINK

I don't know the answer yo your second question. I believe wifi is needed, but the Switch 2 does have Bluetooth capability, so maybe the systems can talk to each other.

No, the Switch 2 units communicate on their own wireless protocols for things like the Virtual Game Card Sharing. It actually shuts the wifi down when it's transmitting/receiving the game info from each system.

You can “link” any game to two systems. The two systems can be any two combination switch 2s, switch 1s, switch lites.

Works well. To establish the link they need to be close by and you will need access to the internet to migrate save data between the systems.
