New Vegas >>> Fallout 3 > Fallout 4.
To be fair, I enjoyed all three games. The critiques are not to say any of them are garbage. NV felt like a proper RPG. The most choice/consequence, your stats affected how quests and dialog can be completed. Best storyline, companions, and NPCs. A lot of people didn't like the world as much, but I felt it had plenty of interesting locations to explore.
For the two BGS games, FO4 had the better world design and shooting, but FO3 still felt like a RPG with actual skill/speech checks and surprisingly in-depth side quests. FO4 put some choices in the main quest, but they were laughably implemented and I often found them not making sense. The writing in FO4...... was really awful through the majority of the vanilla game.
Far Harbor, The Pitt, and Point Lookout were BGS's best contributions to Fallout. Never understood why BGS's expansions are always so much better than the main game (Oblivion and Skyrim had the same thing). Haven't gotten around to Nuka World yet, but I'd like to when it goes on sale next.

FO4 had so much potential but it really lacked the story that made New Vegas and FO3 great. I know some people loved it but I never got into the settlement building and all that shite.

I liked Fallout 4 less then the other two, which isn't to say its a steaming turd mind you, it just wasn't as much fun for me personally as NV or FO3.
I think I read somewhere they are working on a new property so they don't get stuck as the Fallout/Elder Scrolls studio.
