Unfortunately there isn't a bonfire close to him. Some tips, roll around and throw fire bombs at him until you are backed up and then climb the ladder on the tower and then jump down and attack him. He should be at 1/4th health by that point, so run away and firebomb him some more.

by the bonfire in the burg there's a separate platform with two spear guys on it, smash the boxes and there's stairs, take those down and straight ahead is the merchant.

I'm assuming you have the bonfire lit near the guy with a crossbow. He is to right once you walk out of the gate. You must get around the two spear-wielding skeletons and destroy some boxes to expose a downward staircase to find him.

finally got past that fire breathing dragon bridge and once you get underneath there's something you can do to that dragon and get the drake sword out of it (200 attack power). now i one shot everything in the burg. except that black knight, might try him again now.
