never actually said that

It's been two days since the reveal of Battlefield V so I wanted to share some thoughts on the reactions so far. It sure seems we created a lot of excitement, and also some questions on a lot of different topics.

First, let me be clear about one thing. Player choice and female playable characters are here to stay.

quote:

We want Battlefield V to represent all those who were a part of the greatest drama in human history, and give players choice to choose and customize the characters they play with.

Our commitment as a studio is to do everything we can to create games that are inclusive and diverse. We always set out to push boundaries and deliver unexpected experiences. But above all, our games must be fun!

quote:

The Battlefield sandbox has always been about playing the way you want. Like attempting to fit three players on a galloping horse, with flamethrowers. With BFV you also get the chance to play as who you want. This is #everyonesbattlefield.

It's rare that in PR they actually directly address something like that, but I think the message came across all right.

Unless "frick off" or something to that matter was stated somewhere other than twitter. I don't know.

Seriously, other than on message boards, I'm not seeing the outcry about the SJW stuff. People are over it and, like I said, were hopeful for another setting but are waiting to see how the final product will be.

From what I posted, honestly doesn't seem that hostile.

Good that release date sucked, and maybe this means the BR will be ready at launch.

You don’t think explicitly telling your consumers not to buy the game is hostile?

Maybe. But I'd rather them stick to their guns rather than bow to the whims of the internet, especially if they feel strongly about it. This isn't a loot box issue, which yes, you listen to your customers. If it's people upset about having a playable character option they don't have to pick, you can't listen to that.

Maybe just don't make that statement at all and deal with the ramifications of a small pocket being mad. You're right, saying that out loud is going to turn a lot more people away. But if the game is good, they'll eventually buy it.

I just agreed it was a bit hostile. It was essentially telling them to put up or shut up. And I bet a lot of them are going to shut up, like I said, if the game is good.

ETA That "don't buy the game" comment was from Soderland, who actually just left EA.

quote:

On the [women] in Battlefield, this is something that the development team pushed. Battlefield V is a lot about the unseen, the untold, the unplayed. The common perception is that there were no women in World War II. There were a ton of women who both fought in World War II and partook in the war.

These are people who are uneducated—they don’t understand that this is a plausible scenario, and listen: this is a game. And today gaming is gender-diverse, like it hasn’t been before. There are a lot of female people who want to play, and male players who want to play as a badass [woman].

And we don’t take any flak. We stand up for the cause, because I think those people who don’t understand it, well, you have two choices: either accept it or don’t buy the game. I’m fine with either or. It’s just not ok.

this article

quote:

The problem with the “historical accuracy” argument is simple: Battlefield is not, and has never been, a historically accurate game. When PC Gamer sat down with a historian to ask about Battlefield 1, said historian noted a laundry list of historical inaccuracies, including:

-Incomplete weapon operation animations
-Improperly decorated uniforms
-Inaccurate depictions of house-to-house fighting
-Far fewer weapon jams than in reality
-Inaccurate depiction, use, and availability of automatic weapons

And that’s before we get to the really big stuff, like, say, using a wrench to repair a horse. This was later patched so that you can only repair a horse with a wrench if someone else is riding it, because obviously that was the problem. Dice’s firm commitment to historical accuracy demanded nothing less.

good move on EA's part,

Not sure why he left.

ETA It was a 20 million dollar bonus to entice him to stay, and he still left

It's only complicated because someone won't let it go. Before they backed up on the anthem policy, they were giving players the option to stay in the locker room, and most everyone felt that was fine, college teams do that anyways. But someone still felt it wasn't good enough and made it more of a headline again.
