Not for me. This is about a Japanese company colluding with a US government entity to block the merger of two United States companies. This is a HUGE problem that goes far beyond "$500 consoles," in my view.

Not only taking a discussion out of context, but also highlighting one line in one email discussion to pretend that somehow has driven Microsoft's corporate strategy. Nevermind that such a strategy didn't actually happen.
i guess we're just going to ignore the fact that microsoft makes an offer of $60+ billion to purchase one of the largest gaming publishers in the world 2 years after this email was sent.

you think an industry takeover happens overnight? this takes years of planning.

The email you highlighted was only talking about Game Pass during 2020. It wasn't a discussion about overall strategy.
Also, Sony is still the market leader even after the purchases of Bethesda and Activision. Microsoft isn't even close to taking over the industry.

No joke, especially when game pass PC makes owning an Xbox pointless.

well, if microsoft was out here just slinging their windows dick down on every publisher/developers tables wanting to purchase them within the span of year, it would be too obvious.
it's clear they want Game Pass to be the Netflix of gaming and they want all the content for themselves.
One company to own it all...
ONE....
MONO...

I see no value in it. The exclusives alone aren't worth the purchase in my view, and that's really all it has. Nothing else about the Playstation is comparable to Xbox. I'd say Nintendo exclusives are worlds better than Playstation exclusives, so for me I buy the Switch for exclusives (and portability, to a much lesser extent) and the XBox for Game Pass. The 1 or 2 games I feel like I've "missed out on" because they're on Playstation don't provide enough value to commit to a console purchase. If I want to play them bad enough I can just wait 10 years and get the system super cheap.

For sure.

This is about as clear as mud.

I also see no value in owning a gaming PC. If I were to make a gaming PC, I'd want it to be truly awesome, and I just can't justify spending that kind of money on video games. Especially when I already spend all day on a computer for work.

Meh most console owners spent the money on a new TV with hdmi 2.1 plus 400-500 for the console. Not much different for a much worse experience.

My consoles are basically streaming boxes for Hulu Live

True, but I use the TV for a lot more than gaming, and would probably spend just as much on gaming monitors that I would only use for gaming.

The image with Sega, Ubisoft, and Madden on it? Ok I guess.
ETA: and 2K and Assassin's Creed, for some reason?

And people use computers for a lot more than gaming.

That's nice. I wouldn't use a personal computer (as in "computer I personally own") for work. That would be an incredibly stupid thing to do.

Simplistic view. This was great when Azure was making boatloads of profit, that shite is gone. Satya is gonna come calling on gamepass ASAP and shite will hit the fan.
You can't spend 100m+ on a game and then give it away for free on your platform for 16.99/mo. The model doesn't work, games will all be seasonal to keep people from cancelling and they will all be arse.
MSFT is a shitbag company, bill gates is a shitbag child molester, i have no idea why you are so devoted to them. But the netflix model will not work with AAA games, the dev cost is way to high.

This is a weird connection to make.

The problem with this line of thinking is that the business model is working and has been resulting in higher profits for Xbox than Playstation is enjoying. Yes, MS will need to keep the subscriber base high, but based on the number of gamers who ONLY play Call of Duty, adding every Call of Duty game to Game Pass on release day is likely going to be all they need to keep them over that hump.

I would absolutely oppose such a thing, but this is a hypothetical based on a "Microsoft is the enemy" viewpoint. I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft as a company overall but so far this has clearly not been the business model for Game Pass and there is nothing that would lead you to believe it will be the model moving forward.

I have no devotion to Microsoft. From a gaming perspective, they have the better product so I purchase it.
It is possible to disagree with a company on certain things and still realize that they are not in the wrong about everything. If you aren't capable of doing such a thing, that is a you problem. As it relates to the MS/ABK deal, the opposition to it is WRONG. It is certainly possible for Microsoft to be wrong about other future hypothetical deals that aren't currently in process that would give them too much power in the gaming market, but that simply isn't the situation happening here.
Additionally, there is absolutely no reason any American should want American companies Microsoft and Activision to lose in an effort to prop up Japanese company Sony.
Is Bill Gates even involved with Microsoft anymore?

I don't think I'm the one missing the signals here.
Microsoft definitely wants a Japanese gaming company to help them make headwinds into that market, so I guess Sega seems the most likely out of the three. I think MS would likely target other Japanese gaming companies, but I'm sure they'd consider Sega if it were available for purchase. Seems more likely that Nintendo would buy Sega imo.
Maybe EA would happen, I guess. That company puts out so little good new content that I can't say I keep up with them much. I guess this would be mostly about Madden? Game Pass already has EA Play, which includes EA's back catalogue. That shows a good relationship between the companies, but I'm not sure there would be much added value there for Microsoft.
Ubisoft purchasing Activision's cloud streaming rights to calm regulatory concerns is a huge indicator that Microsoft will NOT be buying Ubisoft. Suggesting otherwise is simply nonsensical. They would obviously have such a merger blocked in the UK, at the very least, and probably in other jurisdictions as well. Maybe in 10-15 years when it's clear what will happen with cloud streaming, that market either never happens or is fully fleshed out, and whatever cloud gaming deal they've made has potentially ended, but I doubt it. In short, Microsoft would not have made this deal with Ubisoft if a purchase of Ubisoft was in the realm of possibility. This one is a HUGE stretch.
I think it's more likely that XBox would look to purchase Japanese companies that are doing pay-for-exclusives deals with Sony, like Square Enix, who has seen major market value losses due to their exclusives arrangements with Sony. LINK
In the US, if the rumors that WB is looking to divest from gaming turn out to be true then WB Games would seem like an obvious purchase if they could work out a deal to continue using WB's IP.
