What is the advantage/disadvantage of the switch 2 over the steam deck outside Nintendos exclusives?
This is like asking for Xbox vs PlayStation. The two don’t overlap. As you say you aren’t techie, I’ll ignore modding or using moonlight to bridge the gap.
Pick the platform whose games you would like to play (potentially on the go, as it sounds you already have a gaming computer).
If you are okay with the desktop, but want access to Nintendo games, switch is your only option.

Thanks. So there’s no real discernible power between the two? I am aware the steam deck can be tweaked a lot even if I got someone who knew what they’re doing to do it for me would they be worth weighing playing my steam library on the go vs Nintendo or is that all nonsense?

It’s not about power.
You want to play games.
Cool.
What device gives you access to the games you want to play. One can be grossly more powerful than the other but if that platform doesn’t have too many games that interests you then what’s the point?
I’ll say that baseline SteamDeck is very user friendly. If you want to just play/stream steam games, you don’t need a tech friend for anything. It’s all very smooth, intuitive, and integrates into steam easily.
You can play a game on your PC, and pick up the save on the deck later.

How easy is it upgrade the memory thinking of getting a 256gb and upgrading later to a 1 TB

On steam deck? If you have any computer building comfort level easy enough. It’s almost like they designed it to be easy.
You’ll spend more time installing the OS than making the hardware switch.
