you would think
impressed that microsoft got the S down that low. that's a seriously gimped console though
no clue how they're selling the XSX for $499 with those specs. I understand taking losses to promote your ecosystem, but they're going to be eating shite at that price

They are playing the long game. Only Nintendo has ever really made much money on the hardware itself. They have to find a way to get the machine into your house, THEN make money off of all the other stuff.
I can see a lot of people doing the $35/mo thing to get an XBox.

What do they do if you don't pay your bill? Send Bill Gates to your house to bust your knee caps? Brick it?
They can damn sure brick it if they want to.

So assuming a 24 month payment schedule, $35/month actually sounds like a decent deal with game pass included. It's actually $20 cheaper than if you bought the Xbox and Game Pass separately. $840 vs $860. The series S is an even better deal when financed.

Games are about to start costing $70-75

I'm sure this is what happens if you stop paying.

With the $300/$500 pricepoint all but confirmed, you'd have to imagine that Sony will have a $400/500 pricepoint incoming.
Sony waited for MSFT to release prices first

I feel like Microsoft will survive the loss on consoles some how

Edit to add Sony

Classic Xbox defense. Totally irrelevant. Both companies do totally different things. Sony is into games, movies, and consumer electronics. Microsoft does enterprise level software, hardware, cloud, web services, etc. Much larger in scale and scope

quote:
The division, which includes Xbox hardware, Xbox and software and services, revenue from games made by Microsoft as well as other studios, generated more than $10 billion in annual revenue for the first time.

Nintendo, whose North American headquarters is just down the road from Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., struck gold with the Nintendo Switch this year. The smash-hit console powered Nintendo to $9.7 billion in net sales for its fiscal year ending in March, up 105 percent from the year before.
Sony, with the PlayStation 4, is the clear leader among console makers and its financials reflect that. For the year ending in March, the company’s Game and Network Services division generated $17.7 billion in sales and $1.6 billion in profit for the year, more than any other part of the company.
ETA here we go
FY2019
quote:
In the year ended March 31, 2020, Sony's Game and Network Services division earned ¥1.98 trillion ($18.5 billion), down 14% year-on-year. The games division made an operating profit of ¥238 billion ($2.2 billion), down from ¥311 billion the year before.
quote:
Xbox gaming made roughly $11.4 billion in Fiscal Year 2019, once again accounting for less than 10% of Microsoft's total revenues for the period ($125.84 billion)
