Cuphead
Nier Automata
Hellblade
Horizon Zero Dawn
Zelda: BotW
Mario Odyssey
PUBG ( )
Persona 5
Samus Returns
Nioh
Jesus Christ late 2016-2017 was a hell of a year for gaming. Lot of good indies. PlayStation was great as always. Even Xbox had at least SOME decent titles that just recently hit the scene that year. Nintendo just rose from the dead out of nowhere and have been riding the hype train ever since.
Can’t really recall a similar year where so many mega titles came out in such a small timeframe.

1998 is the winner of best year for games ever, in my and lots of other people's opinion.
A selection of notable titles that were released in 1998
The heavy hitters:
Resident Evil 2
StarCraft
Banjo-Kazooie
Metal Gear Solid
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
StarCraft: Broodwar
Half-Life
Pokemon Red/Blue
And there were plenty of other great games that were less notable
1080° Snowboarding
Xenogears
Parasite Eve
F-Zero X
Spyro the Dragon
Star Wars Rogue Squadron

1998 was pretty great. Starsiege Tribes was the year also. Greatest FPS still. Was online only, in 1998 with up to 32v32 player matches.
Tribes Legacy HD - Part 1 - Skill
Tribes Legacy HD - Part 2 - Speed
Tribes Legacy HD - Part 3 - Synergy

H0llow Knight
Dead Cells
Snipper Clips.........I actually liked it, guys.
Uncharted: Lost Legacy
Night in the Woods
Pyre
Evil Within 2
ASSASSIN'S CREED ORIGINS
What Remains of Edith Finch
Prey
Resident Evil 7
Lots of notables left off your list. But yeah, really good year.
But then again, 2016 was pretty damn good too.
Overwatch
Inside
Uncharted 4
Doom
Titanfall 2
The Witness
Firewatch
Hitman
Xcom 2
Last Guardian
Division.....rough launch, but it got to a really good place eventually.
Stardew Valley
Superhot
Hyper Light Drifter
Thumper
Persona 5 (when it actually came out)
The Switch released in '17, so maybe that's the reason for your thread.

A good bit. BotW and Mario are both considered I’d say either 1 or 2 in their franchise respectively in the sense of which game is the best in the series. Especially in scale. But the indie scene was strong as well and it was overall just a glorious year in gaming. No scandals or anything. Some really good esports moments. Really nothing more you could ask for.
I also mentioned Persona because of strictly being at the game awards and the time frame they gave for the specific award ceremony.

You forgot some pretty influential games like Gran Turismo, Rainbow Six, and Unreal.
PC, PS1, and N64 were all rocking. Even the Game Boy too.
