Does anyone have actual experience with the Coravin Wine system?

I'm looking to get my mom something for Christmas. Is this just an expensive way to do the same a lesser value item can do?

The best there is

I have a closet full of openers and the best is in the link. It’s also the cheapest, easily portable and not hard to use. Plus cheap enough to buy a few to keep in different places.

For Christmas get her a couple of these and spend the balance of the cost of the Coravin on a really nice 1 or 2 bottles of wine she might have never had or won’t buy for herself.

And also a nice decanter is a great gift.

Coravin is great if you don't want to open a nice/older bottle of wine, but just have a taste or a glass.

We have one and never use it. And, we drink a lot of wine.

Not to sound snarky or anything, but you are asking whether a $350-500 wine opener is just an expensive way of doing something a lesser value item can do?

It's not a wine opener; it allows you to pull a glass of wine out without pulling the cork.

I get it and know what it does.

How many uncorked glasses of wine must one drink to earn back what you paid up front for the device?

I have a lot of trouble not pouring a 2nd glass for me and for my wife....this thing would never get used in my house.

We're on the same page. See my post earlier in this thread:

It's a great application for a very select few. Have a couple of friends with some pretty incredible libraries. They will bust it out to grab a pour of some rare/old juice from time to time.

More than anything, I think most just view it as a "cool" gift.

Some of my sales reps use Coravins to keep the wine fresh throughout the day, but that is the only time I've ever seen one used. Don't think it's necessary for everyday use

So like you don't finish the bottle?

Triggered.

The issue with the Coravin is that it’s best application is pulling a glass out of an older bottle of wine without opening the bottle. That is a problem because most older red wines have sediment and jetting an inert has into the bottle stirs up the sediment, which screws up the wine. I’ve had one for a few years. I used it a bit when I got it when I just wanted a glass of wine, but I don’t use it much anymore. It isn’t useful on older wines and I find it actually doesn’t keep younger wines as fresh as advertised.

I agree it is sometimes difficult to justify the expense for a Coravin. However, I do use mine to pour glasses from larger format bottles when I know two of us aren't going to(or shouldn't)finish a Jeroboam in one sitting. I would call it a good gift for someone who already has everything wine-related. An engraved Laguiole opener is also a fine gift.

Martini

Exactly what we use. Works easily and every time.

An almost perfect design.

I bought one for my dad for Christmas about 3 years ago. It’s still in the box. What a waste of $350.
