That's easy...sushi.

Americans have found a way to create bullshite rolls crammed with multiple kinds of fish, cream cheese, topped with at least one kind of aioli, and a handful of crumbled deep fried stuff, cut into pieces too big to fit into a mouth. This breaks all of the rules of Japanese cuisine.

Gumbo recipes are like opinions, everybody has one and thinks their’s is the best.

So according to your argument, technically gumbo could contain tomatoes, clams, Brussels sprouts, and pineapple because it might taste good to someone.

That is not bastardization. It does not completely change the dish. It just add a different layer of umami and richness. You would never know it was in there.
