Does anyone else still watch this?
I normally enjoy these types of regional travel shows, but man, John T. Edge's dramatic SUUUTH-ERRRR-INNNN accent seems to get more exaggerated and more dramatic every year. He went to Georgia and Ole Miss, and I'm not sure where he's from originally, but he sounds like a Yankee trying to fit in, or maybe like a Southerner playing up his Southern-ness to entertain yankees at a dinner party.
Does anyone else find it distracting? His normal conversational voice isn't that bad, but the narration makes you think there's going to be a tragic hurricane story coming up in every segment instead of fish & grits at some ordinary family joint. The heavy vocal emphasis is on every other word is so weird.
Of course, Wright Thompson is the producer of the show.

The overdramatic narration is annoying. The show tries too hard.

It is try hard but they do feature some legit southern hidden gem type places so I’ll cut them some slack. He’s far less on the nose with his work for Southern Foodways Alliance

Yeah, I used to get a newsletter from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at Ole Miss, and I think I also remember him from Oxford American in the early-mid 2000's. He's much easier to read than listen to.
Some people just place vocal emphasis in weird random places, with him it's on like every other word. It has the odd effect of sounding like an anthropologist who made the startling discovery of a black man who also eats food just like the narrator does. Like Alan Lomax marveling over the way black musicians had natural rhythm because of their souls or whatever

100% agree. I can't watch it anymore because it annoys the hell out of me.

JTE is annoying as hell, glad I'm not the only one. I wish Wright Thompson did the narration instead.

There is an argument to be had that Southern - and Cajun - are 2 different animals.

It's problematic. I think we would rather see more about the local joints and the food they serve vs. some long drawn out back story about how the air was when he woke up that morning.
I wish it was more to do with the actual food
