Is this a good deal for someone looking to learn to smoke meats? Traegar Ridgeland grill, 40lb of pellets and a cover for $550.

I have a pit boss pellet smoker which is almost identical to the Traegars and I love it. The Ridgeland grill seems too small to me. The Pit boss I have is much bigger and I use it almost ever day these days. I can't imagine using a smoker that is that tight on the interior. If I were you and were going to be spending that kind of money on a grill I would upgrade to the Timberline size Traegar. My pit Boss was $700 + $80 Cover + $20ish for a big bag of pellets.

I bought one is the qvc specials about 4 years ago. Still going strong today. I was also given a bigger treager a few weeks ago. The smaller qvc one gets hotter faster and uses way less pellets.

I dont know much about that model but I have a Traeger pro 780 and enjoy it. I have it and a Weber Spirit II.

Seems like a decent deal though. I don't use Traeger pellets though, I buy Lumberjack from Rural king. Way cheaper work the same.

Using a plug in oven is not the way to learn about smoking meats.

OP this is long read but I would buy a Z Grill 7002E if you want a quality pellet grill on a budget. They built Traeger grills for for decades before they went out on their own in 2017. Traeger has many grills for all budgets. I’ve known dozens of people that owned Traegers over the years from their budget grills to their more expensive higher end type offerings. They all seem to like them. But that Z Grill 7002E is widely considered one of the best budget pellet grills available. I helped a friend put his together and it was sturdy and well built. It’s bigger than the one you are asking about. He purchased his direct from Z Grills and it came with a rain cover and pellets. It had a stainless steel lid and cost $494. On Campsaver.com its on sale for $386. Cooking dimensions are 19.2 x 26 inches. Smoking & warming rack dimensions are 6.9 x 27.5 inches. Total rack surface area is 700 square inches and has a 20 pound hopper. Is it my dad’s Rec Tec or my brother’s Camp Chef? No. But for someone on a budget I don’t see how there is a finer pellet smoker. I’m telling you it was well built without some of the bells and whistles. I’m going to buy one for the camp. My research showed a few people in 2018 had complaints about temperature control variance with their 700 model. However, they addressed the heat variance issues in the 7002 models and fixed that occasional temperature variance issue. The way I see it Z Grill sells this grill for around $550 normally, 30 years of experience building pellet grills, and are a new name to the public thus they are buying some business to get their name out there. It also comes with a 3 year warranty. I bet I read 25 different websites on 2020 pellet grill reviews and 90% of the time Z Grill wins the Best Budget pellet grill category because you get a lot of bang for your buck.
