In need of a Christmas gift for a client. Last year got him a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, but wanted to switch it up.
The only time I've drank with him he drank bourbon, but he doesn't discriminate.
I was thinking Crown XR this time around, but was seeing if anyone else has a recommendation.

Bottle of Pappy Van Winkle whiskey if you can find it

last year you got him JW BLue and you want to step down to something else like Crown XR? You've kinda set the precedent with the 300+ dollar whiskey there.

Pappy for certain, no comparison.

No. Crown XR is an absurd waste of money IMO. It might be good, but definitely not worth the price tag. These 3 are all cheaper and are really on a different level than XR and are readily available at most high end liquor stores.

Crown XR can be found for ~$85
Johnny Blue can be found for ~$130
Both are overpriced IMO.

If he could get his hands on a Pappy 15 or 20, sure, but it's not widely available.

Clynelish 14 is a much more unique and better gift if he likes scotch.
Not as old as some of the others listed, but as good as balvenie 15, IMO.

Cuban Liquor has this in BR.
Check out Willet as well. Excellent product.
you may also want to try and find a decorative bottle (Woodford Reserve's KY. Derby bottle or Rock Hill farms) My wife gives these to her clients if she knows what the client's hobby(s) is(are)

Probably 10 year and it looks like he's searching for something around $100.

i hear ya, but i'd swear i saw some 23YO reserve on the shelf. Pretty sure Cuban can order it for him in time for Christmas tho.

Move up to a Japanese single malt whisky. A slight 'bump' from last year's gift ( = $1,400 ).
