For those who enjoy beer from The Commons, you had better pick up some bottles now, because they are shuttering down at the end of the year. Is this a sign of oversaturation of beer in Portland coupled with the slowdown in the craft beer market? Who knows? I do know that The Commons was highly respected for their beer - mainly Farmhouse and Wild Ales, but that has not translated into sales, and they have struggled, financially.

All is not lost, as Modern Times has leased the space and will be opening their Belmont Fermentorium, which will include a Modern Times coffee roaster and cafe, in addition to their brewery operations.

There's a place in Cambridge that does this called Lamplighter. Went there for the first time a few weeks ago, really awesome concept. It has the feel of a nice coffee shop, but you can order either beer or coffee. They even had coffee/tea flights.

The building that houses the Commons is really cool. Old, with a lot of natural exposed brick. I'm thinking Modern Times hit a home run with the location.
