Of course you can’t compare different varieties. You compare long grain to long grain, medium grain to medium grain, etc.

What is the difference between Great Value Long Grain and Supreme Long Grain? I’m seriously asking. Does anyone know?

Long grain is not a variety

Most package long grain varieties are cheniere, cl17, diamond , cl16
Then you will have different varieties that are used for parboiled rice or minute rice

Great value will be blends of varieties so it won’t cook as consistently

So variety of rice is based on the actual plant, like the species or breed?

Yes it refers to the breed
different varieties have different agronomic characteristics, they mill differently and they have different cooking characteristics

Excellent info. That’s what I’ve been waiting to hear. So the breed of rice can be different and breeds can cook differently. Now we just need to find out the cooking characteristics and which breeds each company uses.

Im betting a hundred bucks you know my original jambalaya mentor. From the AP and won the Gonzales Grand Champion in 2004. Plus working with Tee Wayne for years, and picked up a lot from taking with him.

But don't confuse it with "Wild Rice" which can techincally only be grown in flowing lakes and rivers in northern Minnesota by Native Americans.
