CS's -- ("Cross the Street" from Millsaps) --

Jackson memories.

Should go back for another Inez burger before they are gone forever.

I can remember when there was no water in the reservoir and Pearl, MS flooded every year. Grew up in Wets Jackson and Clinton, so I never made it as far out as the reservoir and all of the hangouts out there are foreign territory to me.

There were and still are good lunch places downtown. I'm certain the Mayflower is still there, but we haven't been in years.

Still go to Primo's on Lakeland for a fruitcake cookie or gingerbread man from time to time. I remember when they had four restaurants in Jackson.

Best memory was Dad taking me with him to the classic downtown lunch spots to meet the old politicians. Primo's, the Elite, and... ????

I remember when there was a Primo's downtown and two Krystal white and chrome burger places between the train depot and the Old Capitol - one in the block where the Federal building in now and one two blocks below the old Capitol building. I keep wanting to say there were three, but that isn't correct. There was a Primos downtown, One a block or two east of Calvary Baptist church - a few blocks east of the Zoo. A Primos a block south of the old Baptist Hospital, Primos Northgate and toward the end of their Jackson experience a Primos on Ellis Avenue. A few years later, only the one on Lakeland drive was left.

In the 1950s there were some excellent Beer Joints in Jackson and a strong group of Greek heritage restaurants (Primos, Denneries, Elite, Mayflower and a few others downtown. I can't remember the one that is still a block north of the planetarium on Lamar? There were a couple on South State Street in the general area of Hal and Mal's too - between there and Fowler Buick. In those days, the Cherokee Inn on North State was "way out of town".

the Cherokee Inn

When I was a freshman at MC the upperclassmen on the bball team took us to the Cherokee to "drink us shitheads under the table". 21 Coors Lights later and still holding my own in with the pool cue they gained respect for a long lanky country boy for Richland parish. Good times.

Dennery's, that's the name that was missing. It was there that my dad taught me the joy of 1) crackers at the table and 2) pouring what I first thought was salad dressing (Kumback) on said crackers. It probably helped that my uptown New Orleans-raised mom was back home while this redneck ritual was passed from father to son... no Kumback at Galatoire's.

Still have a soft spot in my heart for lunch counters.

I think my Cherokee days were ten or twenty years before your days. The sticks were still warped though even back then.

My memories are that during the day, they covered the pool table with a sheet of plywood and used it for iced tea setups. The plywood only came off at night, after dinner.

I assume you were at the "Old" Cherokee Inn on far North State street a few blocks north of Northside drive. The Cherokee Inn of these days is on a side street off I-55 north and is overrun with kids. As far as I know, the roof on the new version doesn't leak either.

These young yuppie whippersnappers...
